#Bookstores Against Borders

Indie bookstores are awesome, and Gretchen Treu and the staff of A Room of One's Own Bookstore in Madison, WI has put it beautifully, so I'm just going to copy what she wrote here:  "We booksellers are watching the horrors at the border and are feeling small and admittedly helpless.  But we are neither of these things.

We are part of an engaged, active, caring literary community of booklovers. We are involved in our local schools, business associations, and artistic communities. We have community leaders like Denise Chávez of  Casa Camino Real Book Store and Art Gallery, who has spearheaded the   "Libros Para el Viaje" book drive for refugee families. We are involved in our local and national communities. We are integral cultural institutions and have an opportunity, an obligation, to assert what a culture of words and books and imaging has given us -- the ability to see and form a better future."

Summer Game Nights

Book Drive: RUSD Preschool Service Department

On Saturday, July 13th University of La Verne Childhood Devlopment Cohort is teaming up with Cellar Door to collect new and gently used children's books for the RUSD Preschool Service Department. Serving 15 preschools and their families, this department gives parents the opportunity to bring books home to be read to their children. They are currently out of books, so we're hoping to help out and get more books into the hands of kids who need them!
Call for Donations: Real Men Read & Women Who Read

Cellar Door Bookstore is thrilled to partner with the Real Men Read program and Women Who Read program through the DA's office. Author Ayize Jama-Everett was a guest speaker and the participants enjoyed his talk so much that they are clamoring for more copies of his books. If you would like to donate one of Ayize's books or another selection (our booksellers are happy to help you choose!), we'll collect them through Monday, July 29th.
Studies have identified a direct correlation between education and criminal behavior. In fact, 85% of juveniles involved in the juvenile justice system are functional illiterates and 70% of incarcerated adults cannot read above a fourth-grade level. Literacy and education are powerful tools in rehabilitation, preventing crime, and assisting youth at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Real Men Red (RMR) is a young men's literacy and mentorship program. Since its inception, RMR has operated in local communities and every lockdown juvenile justice facility in the county. Recognizing the direct correlation between literacy and incarceration rates, RMR was designed to create an interest in reading amongst its participants while also providing them with guest speakers from local schools and communities that serve as positive role models and mentors. With nearly 1,500 participants reading over one million pages of literature, RMR is a program proven to inspire an interest in education and literacy for a population in desperate need of their benefits.

Welcome the new leader of the Young Spanish Readers Book Club, Ambar Perez!

Cellar Door is so pleased to welcome Ambar Perez as the new leader of the Spanish Readers Book Club! The books and the discussions will all be in Spanish, so this is perfect for bilingual kids, Spanish speakers, kids in Dual Immersion programs, and anyone else wishing to practice Spanish.  

Ambar is both an RUSD middle school teacher and a professor at CSUSB. She has her BA and MA in English from CSUSB, and in her spare time she enjoys taking her rescue pup Courage (he's a bit cowardly) on walks. How lucky we are to have incredible teachers like Ambar who give so much to our community! Join her every third Saturday of the month for a fun book club to practice your Español!

Hot Summer Reads for Teens with Clare

Summer is finally here, and that means school's out and there's more time for reading - inside, poolside, beachside, you name it! This summer, we'll give teens the inside scoop on the best young adult reads coming out. Check out our Instagram and Twitter where we'll be sharing picks by Clare, a Cellar Door regular and teen reader extraordinaire! We'll kick things off with her first pick of the summer:

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas:  If you've ever read The Hate U Give, watched the movie, listened to rap music in any way and enjoyed it (even a little bit), or existed on this planet for at least 14 years, then please read this book. We follow the story of Bri, a 16-year-old rapper on the come up (pun intended) as she struggles with the racial prejudice and poverty she and her family face at home. The family dynamic in this book is heartwarming and her friendship and romantic interest are beautiful. This book tackles the ongoing struggles that African-Americans face in our country through wonderfully written characters and needs to be read by everyone. 

Clare O'Brien is currently a senior (wow, scary) at Poly High School. She's been coming to Cellar Door since the eighth grade as part of the Teen Advisory Board, which is quickly becoming one of her favorite activities. Once summer began, the idea of staying home with her instruments and dog was enticing but quickly grew boring, so she's looking forward to recommending books for the summer! She's an aspiring author interested in developing an understanding of the bookselling business.
