TOP STORIES

Seventy-Two Disciples?

You might think it's a misprint. Everyone knows that Jesus had exactly twelve disciples-so why does the Armenian Church calendar reserve a feast day for the Seventy-Two Disciples of Christ? (We'll observe it this Saturday, October 6.)

In fact, the Seventy-Two Disciples are firmly rooted in Scripture-but only the Gospel of Luke mentions them. They were the "advance team" for Christ's ministry, fanning out into the countryside, preaching in villages and towns-preparing the soil, as it were, for Jesus' personal arrival in a given locale.

"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few," Christ said as he dispatched the 72 disciples. "So the Lord of the harvest has to send more workers out into the fields."

He sent them out "as lambs among wolves," without purse, bag, or sandals. He told them to live simply, but deliver an urgent message.

What happened to them? What might they mean for us today? Click on this link to find out.
PARISH NEWS

Armenian Folk Dance Classes

We are excited to announce that our Armenian Folk Dance Classes are back to our schedule in October! The official start day for the classes will be October 28 right after school and will last about 1.5 hours. Minimum age is 7 (some exclusions may apply), and the class is open to both boys and girls. Students will get an opportunity to learn about Armenian culture through the folk music, songs and dances.

We had a great, but short year last year and the participants had a beautiful performance during the final recital.

There will be an  information session held for all interested parents this Sunday, October 7 right after the Badarak, 12:30pm in the Kindergarten classroom to answer to all your questions and talk about the requirements.

New Items at St. Mary Church

New and notable gifts were recently donated to our Church by generous donors. We are highlighting them so that our congregation can enjoy and appreciate their beauty together.

Website
Mark Bettis donated his time, talent, and resources to create the new St. Mary Armenian Church website at www.stmaryaac.org. If you haven't visited it yet, it is a must see. We can post news and events in real time in a more contemporary look and appeal. The church office now has the capability to customize all of the church events and news and make modifications as needed. We are ever so grateful to Mark for his dedication, expertise, and generosity.

Baptismal Dove
Bagrat Bayburtian donated to St. Mary a beautiful silver winged Baptismal Miuron Dove. The Baptismal Dove is a receptacle that holds the Holy Oil (Miuron) used during the baptism and confirmation and signifies the Holy Spirit.

Organ
Viguen and Teresa Ter-Minassian and Jerair and Anahid Nishanian were generous donors, along with  many of our parishioners ( click here to see list) to help St. Mary purchase our new organ. Thanks to all of our donors, during weekly worship, our Church is filled with beautiful organ liturgical music as it accompanies the majestic voices of our beloved St. Mary Choir. For many years to come, the organ will bring  the marvelous tradition of Armenian spiritual services to the Church community.

Candle Holders
Der Hovhan Khoja-Eynatyan's  kind and generous donation of candle holders for St. Mary's alter are breathtaking, as you can see for yourself by the photo, and of course in the sanctuary. These colorful and elaborate candle holders add sparkle a magnificence to our alter.

Thank you so very much to all of our donors for their  loving support to St. Mary.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS

A Dieu, Charles

It is rare, indeed, to be able to state that an individual's life had a genuine, beneficial impact on the entire world. But in the case of Charles Aznavour-who passed away this week after a long lifetime of compassionate outreach-it was an assertion that could be made with supreme confidence.

Every Armenian knew Aznavour as one of the great creative figures of the 20th and 21st centuries: an icon of music as a performer, composer, and lyricist; an artist of great range and deep sensitivity, utterly distinctive, revered by people from all walks of life, in every nation on earth.

But after mounting to the very summit of artistic achievement, Aznavour showed us yet another aspect of his creative soul, which would ensure his eternal reputation as a great humanitarian.

In response to a great calamity in the land of his heritage-the 1988 earthquake in Armenia-Charles Aznavour launched an international effort to bring relief and comfort to his beleaguered countrymen. Through his Aznavour Pour L'Armenie Foundation, he proved himself a leader in the mission to help build our young republic.

May our Lord remember his servant, and grant all of us who admired Charles Aznavour many occasions to remember his sweet voice and lofty spirit.

Fr. Mesrop Parsamyan Appointed as New Vicar of Cathedral

Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan announced last week that he has appointed the Very Rev. Fr. Mesrop Parsamyan as the new Vicar of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral.

For more than a year Fr. Parsamyan has led the Diocesan staff as Director of Ministries, in which capacity he has become familiar among our clergy and local parishes. He is a seasoned pastor in our Diocese and internationally, with a record of building communities.

In his role at the cathedral, Fr. Parsamyan will succeed Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, who had a long, distinguished service as Cathedral Dean, and for whose service we are deeply grateful. (Please note that Fr. Parsamyan's role is distinct from that of Fr. Simeon Odabashian, who will continue his service as Vicar of the Eastern Diocese.)

Fr. Parsamyan will celebrate his first badarak as cathedral vicar this weekend, on Sunday, October 7, at 10 a.m. in the St. Vartan Cathedral sanctuary (630 Second Ave., New York City).

"We are very excited about the capabilities and enthusiasm Fr. Parsamyan brings to his new role as Vicar of St. Vartan Cathedral," wrote the Primate in a directive to Diocesan leaders. "We encourage our people in the area to be a part of that occasion. In the meantime, we pray that our Lord will continue to guide him, our Diocese, and our people, as we strive to fulfill the mission of the Armenian Church in America."

St. Nersess Seminary Launches Fall Semester

"We're happy to welcome back all our seminarians and two new students who will study for service in the Armenian Church," said seminary dean Fr. Mardiros Chevian, as St. Nersess Seminary began its fall semester last month.

New student Andrew Kayaian grew up in Scarsdale, NY, and attends St. Gregory the Enlightener Church in White Plains. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Fordham University. Previously, he worked at the Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center of the Eastern Diocese. Andrew is pursuing a master's degree in theology from St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary with coursework at St. Nersess.

New student Adam Bullock is from Worcester, MA, where he attends the Church of Our Savior. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Holy Cross College in Worcester, and will be studying Armenian liturgical music, modern and classical Armenian, Armenian Church history and canon law.

Seven other students are studying at St. Nersess and at the Seminary of Holy Etchmiadzin. While all are engaged in coursework during the year, seminarians are also required to spend their summers in educational programs, including a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program, working at Diocesan or AGBU summer camps, and studying at Holy Etchmiadzin or the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Graduates of St. Nersess spend a year at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin to complete their studies. Read more on the seminary website.
FAR Brings Help to a Boy in Need

After two years of working with counselors at the Mardigian Children's Center, 12-year-old Feliks Khachatryan has found his balance.

The center is a part of the Fund for Armenian Relief's "Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program" in Tavush Province. It aims to help at-risk children through games and therapies, enabling them to overcome obstacles like extreme diffidence, behavioral problems, and low self-esteem. The therapies guide children to make friends and socialize.

According to the center's art therapist Gohar Danielyan, Feliks was combative with peers. Coming to the center three times a week and engaging in its play, paint, design, and listen-and-talk therapies, Feliks' behavior gradually changed, resulting in more supportive and caring behavior.

"I don't fight anymore. This helped me understand that fighting is bad, and we should not hurt each other but help each other," said Feliks with a smile.

  BIBLE READING
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?" 29 Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John's baptism-was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!" 31 They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' 32But if we say, 'Of human origin' ..." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)33 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."
Mark 11:27-33
