JAC STATEMENT
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) betrayed women across the country today. We counted on her to be a voice of reason within her party. Her failure to do so will have a long-lasting impact on women's healthcare for generations to come. JAC will continue its mission to elect candidates that share our values for reproductive freedom. Today shows why voting in November is so critical. Elections have consequences.

Trump Administration Welcomes Launch of Israel Defense Pact Signed Under Obama

The Trump Administration welcomed the "the bi-partisan nature" of U.S. support for Israel, as a 10-year defense agreement signed in 2016 under President Barack Obama kicked in. The $38 billion Memorandum of Understanding went into operation this week, the first day of the new fiscal year.
In Jerusalem, Merkel Says Palestinians Must Accept Israel as Jewish State

At a joint press conference in Jerusalem, Merkel said she plans to call Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and ask him several questions about the peace process, including about his policies vis-a-vis Gaza. She endorsed the two-state solution, but also acknowledged that there are "many other" possible ways to solve the conflict.
PA Prevents Gaza from Receiving Qatari Fuel Aid, Increasing Danger of Violence

For the umpteenth time in recent months, Israel has received proof that severed relations between Jerusalem and Ramallah and between Ramallah and Gaza could significantly compromise security on the Gaza border. Abbas has repeatedly warned that that there can be no two separate entities ruling Palestinian lands, stating that if the PA is not handed complete control of the Gaza Strip, Hamas will have to take full responsibility for the territory.

Members of California White Supremacist Group Arrested in Connection with Deadly Charlottesville Rally

Four California men who allegedly shared white supremacist views and trained together on boxing and street-fighting techniques were arrested by federal authorities Tuesday on charges that they traveled to Virginia with the intent to incite a riot and commit violence at last year's deadly far-right rallies in Charlottesville.
Fighting Anti-Semitism 'Beyond National Borders'

Often referred to as one of the world's oldest hatreds, anti-Semitism continues to show itself as current as the latest headlines: the U.S. Department of Education's decision to reopen a seven-year-old bias case against Rutgers University; the flyer sent by New York State's Democratic Party accusing gubernatorial candidate [and synagogue member] Cynthia Nixon of being silent on anti-Semitism; the ongoing controversy over allegations of anti-Semitism within England's Labour Party; and the Anti-Defamation League's report that indicates an increase in anti-Semitic incidents in this country.

House Republicans Jam 'Personhood' Language into New Tax Bill

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives have passed a package of bills dubbed "Tax Reform 2.0" containing a provision extending the ability to count "unborn children" as beneficiaries under 529 education savings plans.
Why I'm Training to Be a Doctor Who Performs Abortions

In my small class of just 100 students at Stanford School of Medicine, many of my peers dream of becoming neurosurgeons. The ability to save lives from the most devastating of diseases drives them to enter the most competitive and demanding of fields. I, too, want to save lives from the devastating circumstances that unfairly befall all of us. But it is not neurosurgery that interests me. Instead, I dream of becoming something else entirely: a gynecologist providing the full spectrum of reproductive services - including abortion.
Only These 8 States Require Sex Education Classes to Mention Consent

In elementary school, children get the talk about unwanted touching. In college, they learn about boundaries and what constitutes assault. But in between, sex education in schools is often an antiseptic regurgitation of the science of reproduction mixed with healthy doses of the need for protection and, increasingly, abstinence. This moment in politics has spurred many different conversations. One of them: how schools teach students about consent and sexual assault.
Do Migrant Teenagers Have Abortion Rights? Two Volatile Issues Collide in Court

The Trump administration is claiming broad new authority to block access to abortions sought by undocumented immigrants under age 18 who are in its custody. In a case that brings together two of the most volatile issues in American society, immigration and abortion, the Justice Department argued this past week before a federal appeals court that the government "has a strong, legitimate and profound interest in the life of the child in the womb."

Churches in Hurricane Florence's Path Look to FEMA for a Helping Hand

How is Hurricane Florence different from past storms along the Eastern Seaboard? For some houses of worship, it may have brought the potential of government help. Thanks to a lawsuit filed on behalf of churches damaged by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the workers are also directing Carolina churches to sources of government assistance.

Las Vegas Shooting Survivors Grieve One Year Later: 'You're Missing Your Soul Mate'

One year later, survivors and family members of the victims at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on Oct. 1, 2017, are still healing, physically and emotionally.
Guns Stolen from Memphis Ups Facility Were Found en Route to Chicago

Hundreds of stolen guns have been found en route to Chicago after the firearms went missing Sunday from a United Parcel Service facility in Memphis, Tennessee. Police in Midlothian, Illinois, recovered the guns that were reported missing.
Some Americans Want To Give Up Their Guns - But It's Complicated

Up until last year, Hooper had never doubted his pro-gun stance. He was raised in a gun-owning household, and back in Las Vegas he'd hit up the local shooting range for target practice or head out to the desert to plink targets with friends on the weekends. Then, on Oct. 1, 2017, Hooper attended the Route 91 country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip and narrowly survived the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history

COURT WATCH
Senate Advances Kavanaugh One Step Closer to Confirmation

The Senate on Friday voted to end debate on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, moving one step closer to a final vote amid a deeply partisan fight stemming from multiple sexual assault allegations against the nominee and lingering questions concerning his fitness to serve on the high court. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) was the only Republican senator to vote no on cloture.
Predictions of a 'Kavanaugh Wave' in November. But for Democrats or GOP?

In an era when the everyday deluge of news coming out of Washington can often feel too overwhelming, the Senate hearing last week to examine allegations of sexual assault against President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee seems to have broken through to an unusual degree.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Unlikely Path to the Supreme Court

God bless Ruth Bader Ginsburg, goats, bobbleheads, and all. But trivialization-R.B.G.'s workout tips! her favorite lace collars!-is not tribute. Female heroes are in short supply not because women aren't brave but because female bravery is demeaned, no kind more than intellectual courage. Isn't she cute? Ginsburg was and remains a scholar, an advocate, and a judge of formidable sophistication, complexity, and, not least, contradiction and limitation. It is no kindness to flatten her into a paper doll and sell her as partisan merch
Beyond Brett Kavanaugh's Past, We Must Consider the Future of Abortion

For at least as long as Brett Kavanaugh has been nominated for a Supreme Court seat, he has been justifiably considered to be a potential danger to reproductive freedom. Since he represents a possible fifth and decisive vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, Kavanaugh poses a threat to the future of legal and safe reproductive health care, including abortions. However, the focus around Kavanaugh's confirmation has been primarily on the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him dating back to his high school and undergraduate years
POLITICAL BYTE
Republicans Say They're Optimistic in House Races. Democrats Are Acting like It

It has been at least 10 years - before the rise of super PACs - since Republicans were forced into "triage" mode like this. Democrats, while unsure of exactly how the drama around Brett M. Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination will play out,  expect it to weaken the president's support in the suburbs.
Where to Look on Election Day for Early Signs of a 'Blue Wave'

Democrats will get some early signals on election night of whether they should start breaking out the champagne or gird for disappointment. Bellwether competitive House districts in the Eastern time zone stretch from upstate New York to Florida and include economically struggling former industrial hubs, affluent suburbs and diverse urban regions. Some are must-wins for Democrats to have a chance at flipping the House, while the results in others would provide a glimpse into whether there'll be a "blue wave" that convincingly sweeps Republicans out of power in Congress. Democrats need to win 23 House districts now held by Republicans.
Voter Registration Data Suggests Democrats' Longed-For 'Blue Wave' Will Crash over Republicans in November

The outstanding question of the last two years - for which we're soon get an answer - is whether all the liberal rage at the election of President Donald Trump will actually lead to a "blue wave" in the 2018 midterm elections.

NASA Teams up with Israel on Probe Launching to Moon's Surface Next Year

NASA officials said  that they will work with Israel on a probe slated to reach the moon in February, making it the fourth country in the world to reach the lunar surface. The American space agency and the Israel Space Agency have signed an agreement to "cooperatively utilize" the probe, being built by Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL to study the moon's magnetic fields. The agreement essentially means both countries will benefit from this mission.
The Best Sukkahs on Instagram Right Now

Building a sukkah is quite a feat, even if you buy one in pieces that you just have to put together. The process can take hours, and the result is not always glamorous. But eating meals under a thatched roof, with the blue sky or shining stars peeking through, is quite the reward (if the weather is nice, of course). While roaming Instagram for some Sukkot inspiration, we found a wide array of original sukkahs.

Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs (JACPAC) is a pro-Israel PAC with a domestic agenda. We support a strong U.S.-Israel relationship and advocate for reproductive health and the separation of religion and state and incorporate other issues of importance to the Jewish community, including gun violence prevention and climate change. In addition to providing financial support for U.S. Senate and House campaigns, JACPAC educates our membership with outreach events designed to inform and activate their participation in the political process.
Federal law requires political committees to report the name, mailing address, occupation and employer for each individual who contributes over $200 in a calendar year. Maximum contribution per person may not exceed $5,000 per calendar year. According to law, JACPAC cannot accept corporate contributions.
