CELEBRATING OVER 150 YEARS IN
THE DIOCESE OF UTAH
As we enter our 151st year, we continue to reflect on our history. This photo of a packed room of All Saints parishioners was taken in the fall of 1951. All Saints did not have a church building to meet in until 1955. Before that, they met in such places as a hall at Fort Douglas, a restaurant, a garage and a basement.

As the season changes and we return to our regular church schedule, let us be grateful for the buildings and parish halls we have to meet in, but also remember that church can be anywhere that there are faithful people.

The Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler Commissioned as Course Director at St. George's College in Jerusalem
On Sunday. September 2nd, The Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler was commissioned as the new Course Director for Religious Studies at St. George's college.

The Holy Eucharist and commissioning took place at St. George Cathedral in Jerusalem.

Bishop Scott B. Hayashi and Craig Wirth were present at the service. Archbishop Suheil Dawani celebrated the service and commissioned The Rev. Canon Nestler to her new responsibilities. The Archbishop invited Bishop Hayashi to concelebrate with him, which he says he was honored to do.

The service was well attended by students, visitors and local residents. The Very Rev. Hosam Naoum, Dean of the Cathedral was gracious to let Craig video the service.

Following the service there was a reception and then Mary June+ went to work coordinating details, getting to know the new students and welcoming visitors to St. George's.

The diocese's prayers are with Canon Nestler for success in her new position.

Mediation Training or "How I Spent My Summer Vacation"
by The Rev. Charles Robinson
I was asked to share a thought or two about my experiences while attending the Lombard (Chicago) Mennonite Peace Center’s week-long mediation training course in early August. Two words come to mind: powerful and exhausting. Perhaps the most powerful aspect was the effectiveness of the process and skills practiced in leading people to move from entrenched, self-righteous and hostile positions toward openness, honesty, courage and a willingness to face and own one’s personal contributions to the dysfunctional conflicts that have arisen within the congregation. We concluded the week practicing how to help people ask forgiveness of one another. It felt like standing on holy ground.

Training in the ministry of mediation toward reconciliation quite powerfully gave me a renewed sense of the intrinsic goodness of people that always lives within us in spite of our less-than-stellar behavior at times and a revitalized sense of hope that all of us can find new life if we are willing to do the spiritual and psychological work that can get us there.

Respectfully,
The Rev. Charles Robinson, M.Div., M.S., M.B.A., M.A.
Rector - St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Serving the Young People of Our Community
by The Rev. Michael Carney
This spring we celebrated the Tenth Anniversary of Arts-Kids and Arts-Teens on the Ute Reservation in Whiterocks. We’ve become an important part of the community, as evidenced by the Tribal Council’s support for our efforts. We serve as a primary prevention program, working with young people ages 5 to 17 to build the healthy living skills they desperately need. We see their growth season by season and are committed to serving them and their families.

The steady growth of these programs (about 20% a year) speaks to the atmosphere of acceptance and trust that’s been created and the value of these gatherings. Thanks to the generous funding we receive from Newfield Oil Company and other smaller gifts, we’ve been able to train new leaders to serve the growing numbers of young people. People say that Whiterocks is a more peaceful community than it was ten years ago, and we like to think that Arts-Kids and Arts-Teens have something to do with that.
