Four Local Students Awarded Chamber of Commerce Scholarships
2019 Scholars
(Left-right) The 2019 CMS Chamber Scholarships recipients are Alissa Lomax, Madison Gendreau, Erika Zayas and Colin Donovan.

The Chamber of Central Mass South is very pleased to announce the winners of the Chamber Scholarships for 2019. This year, four scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to four local students upon successful completion of their first semester of college with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

" Our Scholarship Committee was really put to the test this year," said Chamber Executive Director Alexandra McNitt. "We had many great applications, and the selection process was very competitive. Normally, we finalize it down to three recipients, but this year we felt strongly that these four students deserved our recognition and encouragement. They are all well on their way to being important contributors to our communities."

This year's $1000 scholarship recipients are Madison Gendreau and Alissa Lomax, both graduates of Shepherd Hill Regional High School, Erika Zayas, a graduate of Southbridge High School, and Colin Donovan, a graduate of Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Alissa Lomax, of Charlton, is an exceptional student, smart, capable, driven and courageous. Passionate about school, Alissa has had to overcome challenges that would have stymied many to be successful in her studies. At age eleven, Alyssa beat a rare form of cancer and she is currently battling cystic fibrosis. These health challenges have not diminished her motivation, positive attitude and desire to succeed. Alissa excelled academically in high school and regularly earned her place on First Honors with a challenging mix of Honors, Accelerated and Pre-AP/AP courses. With her intense curiosity and interest in human behavior and thoughts, her desire is to become a psychiatrist. Alissa has been accepted to UMASS Amherst where she will pursue a degree in Psychology and further education in Psychiatry.

Madison Gendreau, of Southbridge, is a committed, thoughtful and dependable student who is described by her peers as a born leader. Her glowing transcript from Shepherd Hill Regional High School exhibits exceptional grades and an abundance of activities, honors and awards. A recipient of the John and Abigail Adams scholarship and the George Eastman Young Leaders Award, Madison served in student government as class secretary all four years at Shepherd Hill and as President of the National Honor Society as a junior and senior. Madison's volunteer work in our community includes time spent at St. Vincent's Memorial Hospital in Worcester, St John Paul II Parish, Jacob Edwards Library as well as Harrington Hospital. She currently is a barista at Sturbridge Coffee Roasters and will continue her studies in pursuit of a profession in the medical field.

Erika Nicole Zayas, of Southbridge, is a diligent and serious student whose integrity, work ethic and leadership skills are respected and admired by her classmates and teachers. Ranked 2nd in her graduating class, Erika is a recipient of the John and Abigail Adams scholarship, a member of National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Erika is bilingual and achieved the highest grade point average in her class in the study of Anatomy and Physiology. She has given many hours of her time in service to our community, is active in Rotary Club and serves as Vice President of ASPIRA of Massachusetts, Inc. Youth Group. Erika currently works as a service associate at Big Bunny Supermarket in Southbridge. She has been accepted to the pre-med program at UMass Amherst where she will pursue her calling in the field of medicine.

Colin P. Donovan, of Charlton, is a dedicated and hardworking student with a passion for history and helping others. Colin, a member of the National Honor Society since his sophomore year, has obtained honor roll status throughout his high school career. An avid runner, Colin has been on the Cross Country team since freshman year and served as a team Captain in his senior year. Student Council, Bay Path Video Game Development Club and the Robotics Club are among his extracurricular accomplishments. In summer, Colin works as a Counselor at the Windham-Tolland 4H Camp in Pomfret, CT where he supervises and sets an example for kids between ages 6 and 15, and serves as Sports Instructor, Fishing Instructor and Cabin Counselor. Colin will pursue degrees in both history and education and hopes to return to the community and become a high school History teacher.

The Chamber and its members are truly gratified to be able to contribute to the ongoing education and success of these exceptional young scholars and offer them best wishes as they embark on their journeys into higher education. The Chamber of Central Mass South typically offers three $1000 scholarships to local students each year. Monies are allocated from the Chamber's Charities and Scholarship Fund which is supported by the annual 'Your Chance to Be a Millionaire' lottery scratch tickets raffle, the Chamber's Annual Golf Classic and individual contributions from Chamber Members. Scholarship applications can be obtained at local high school guidance offices or online at the Chamber website. The annual deadline to apply is April 1.

Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale Accepting Donations
to 70th Annual Auction
Chair Repair
Church volunteer, Bob Knight works on a new wicker seat for a chair to be included in this year's
church auction on August 10.

The Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale is now accepting donations of antiques and collectibles for its 70th Annual Antique Auction to be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019, on the beautiful Sturbridge Common across from the landmark Publick House Historic Inn.

A real old fashioned country auction, this event is now known as the longest annually held church auction in the nation, according to auction committee chair, Ken Benson.

Benson says the committee is currently accepting donations of furniture and other antique items for inclusion in this year's special anniversary auction. "More and more often we read about how challenging it can be for retirees to find a new home for their antiques and collectibles because they're learning that their children aren't interested in them," said Benson. "Not only do we have a ready audience of bidders for these items, but we can also acknowledge the donation for tax purposes."

Area residents interested in donating one or more items may call the Church office at (508) 347-3915 or email churchoffice@sturfed.org and a member of the auction committee will be in touch to arrange a convenient time to pick up your items. Items not selected for the auction block may be added to the church's yard sale or rummage sale later in the year with proceeds benefiting the church's charitable outreach activities in the Sturbridge area.

The auction will be conducted for the 45th year in a row by the Robert H. Glass family of auctioneers. Items up for bid will include an amazing assortment of antique items donated by church and community members, many in original condition and some lovingly restored by local artisans over the past year. The event will be held, rain or shine, under tent, with a preview of items to be sold beginning at 9:00 a.m. and bidding starting promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale Announces
Vacation Bible School Dates
Vacation Bible School
SFC Religious Education Director Jeanne Westcott leads children in a game during the
2018 Vacation Bible School.

It may be approaching the dog days of summer, but it will soon be time for penguins and icebergs for children attending the Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale's annual Vacation Bible School, slated to be held July 22-26 from 9 a.m. to noon at the church.

According to Director of Religious Education Jeanne Westcott, the theme for this year's Vacation Bible School is Arctic Exploration and children aged 3-12 are encouraged to attend. "Come dig into the greatest book of all time," says Westcott. "Special surprises await! We'll have Bible stories, crafts, games, music and snacks each morning."

The cost for the program is $35.00 per child. If an adult commits to volunteer all week, one child in their family, or a child they designate may attend for free. Area teens are also encouraged to volunteer to help with the program and community service certificates will be available at week's end.

Registration materials are available at the church. For more information, contact Jeanne Westcott, DRE at  SundaySchool@sturfed.org.

Independence Day
Independence: Fourth of July
Old Sturbridge Village
July 3-4, 2019

An old-fashioned good time will be had by all on Independence Day at Old Sturbridge Village. Visitors will have the chance to take part in a citizens' parade, play 19th-century style "baseball," march with the militia, make a tri-cornered hat, and sign their "John Hancocks" on a giant copy of the Declaration of Independence. Summer barbecue food will be available for purchase along with beer and wine; visitors may also enjoy a picnic on the Common. Children and families will especially enjoy a little physical activity and friendly competition with  "Farm Yard Games."

An exciting feature of the Independence Day festivities is the firing of a reproduction cannon. The cannon has been in production for a few years and is a working model of a "Heavy 3-Pounder," meant to fire 3-pound balls. The cast-iron cannon barrel was made in the 1970s by the LaPans Foundry in Hudson Falls, New York, and purchased by Old Sturbridge Village a few years ago.

On the 4th, watch and be inspired by a citizen naturalization ceremony on the Village Common. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present scores of candidates to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and they will pledge their Oath of Allegiance to the United States for the very first time. Old Sturbridge Village Singers will perform patriotic songs during the ceremony.

"Declaring Independence" Returns
Two times during the day, six costumed re-enactors will render the words of the Declaration line by line, assisted by a narrator who sets these words in their rich historical context. Some lines will be familiar to all; others - especially the many grievances that justified altering an ancient government - will receive background and commentary. As the re-enactors dramatize these 18th-century words and ideas, the narrator will draw out their meaning and challenge the audience to consider their relevance and power for today.

"Declaring Independence" is part of a multi-year joint initiative of Freedom's Way National Heritage Area and the American Antiquarian Society to engage citizens in the ideas and transformative potential of the Declaration of Independence. This initiative includes researching the ways in which independence was conceived and debated within colonial communities in the years leading up to 1776; tracing how the Declaration's role evolved in American communities; and considering the challenges and potential of this living document for Americans today.

70th Annual Leonide J. Lemire Road Race
July 4 at The YMCA

Lemire
Leonide J. Lemire
This Independence Day running a race dedicated to one of our fallen heroes might be a great activity to do to start your holiday festivities. The Leonide J. Lemire Road Race is a 4.9 mile run starting at 9:00am on Everett Street at the YMCA.

This is the 70th running. Leonide was the first Southbridge resident to die in service in World War II. Lemire was in the Navy and was a Seaman First Class on the U.S.S West Virginia. He lost his life on that ship when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Lemire lived on Charlton Street and died at the young age of twenty-four years old.

This race is the second or third oldest continually run race in the country, the Boston Marathon being the first.  Be part of this rich tradition and honor those that have served our country. Truly the United States is the home of the free because of the brave.

Cooking with Rico and Eric: A Tribute to Jacques Pépin
Thursday, July 18, 2019, 6:30pm

Jacques Pépin is world renowned as a French born American chef and as the host of popular cooking programs on public television. He has been cooking for 70 years and counting and has written 31 books, enlightening us about French food. He has also taught at Boston University for more than 30 years. Pépin was born in Bourg-en-Bresse, near Lyon. His first exposure to cooking was as a child in his parents' restaurant, Le Pelican. At age thirteen, he began his formal apprenticeship at the distinguished Grand Hotel de L'Europe in his hometown. He subsequently worked in Paris, training under Lucien Diat at the Plaza Athénée. From 1956 to 1958, Pépin was the personal chef to three French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle.

Moving to the United States in 1959, Pépin worked first at New York's historic Le Pavillon restaurant and studied at Columbia University, ultimately earning an M.A. degree in 18th-century French literature in 1972. In addition to his multifaceted career as a chef, author, and PBS television pioneer, Pepin was a columnist for The New York Times and writes a quarterly column for Food & Wine. He also is a popular guest on such commercial TV programs as The Today Show and Good Morning America.

Join us and experience how Jacques Pepin has influenced Chef Rico and so many other chefs throughout the years. Enjoy some favorite recipes from this culinary giant and hopefully, bring an idea or two home. This event is $55 per person with wine pairings, or $42 without. Tax and gratuity are not included. Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321. Visit online at www.avellinorestaurant.com.

Farmers Dinner
Welcome to our sixth season of Farmers' Dinners...
The inspiration for this menu is solely based on what we have grown here, on our own farm, just steps from our gardens and pastures. The vegetables are grown by our gardeners, Austin and Barry, the herbs are grown by John Salem and the beef is raised by David Salem. Your dinner is prepared by our Chef and his staff who would love to share tips on their cooking with you. Feel free to join in, ask questions or just meet some new people. We look forward to sharing some great dinners with you at this new dinner series. We'll see you in the garden!

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
