CTC Global Supports Transmission & Distribution Energy Efficiency Policy Initiative

During Q-2, 2019, CTC Global participated in six National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) regional meetings held throughout the United States. At these meetings, CTC Global presented a case for the state energy and regulatory offices to work together to initiate a T&D Energy Efficiency Policy within each state.

Specifically, the initiative would "direct" the state electric utilities to use energy efficiency decision criteria and tests to guide increased energy efficiency choices when designing a T&D project.

For these long-lived projects, economic efficiency investment would be made alongside capacity investment from the early design phase of a T&D project.  This is how Minnesota, earlier this year, implemented an Electric Utility Infrastructure efficiency policy initiative.

The policy guidance, initiated by multiple state departments with some additional funding by DOE-Energy Efficiency Office, completed a series of stakeholder workshops which culminated in a FINAL REPORT describing the initiative, its potential energy savings, and recommendations for implementation by the state utilities.

Minnesota's website also offers many other resources for understanding their process and recommendations that other states could adopt for their own policy initiatives.

Each state implementing this policy would see a significant reduction in T&D system losses with a resulting reduction in annual CO2 emissions as well as enabling a smaller amount of generating capacity to fully serve customer electricity demands. CTC Global will be working with several states that have expressed interest in exploring how their state might implement this initiative and gain the resulting economic and emission benefits.

ACCC® Conductor Showcased at UK Networks Exhibition

OHLEx, held at Chester Racecourse in England, provided the venue for a get-together of the UK T&D community on June 11th and 12th, with visitor attendance exceeding 500.

CTC Global's participation was prompted by its continuing commitment to the UK market, and to act as a springboard for the launch of new technologies of interest to UK T&D operators.

Recent projects of interest involving ACCC conductor include a line upgrade for National Grid scheduled to start later in 2019, as well as new and ongoing projects in the Scottish Highlands on 132 kV transmission network.

The ACCC conductor was also featured in a presentation made by Pat Howe, lead project manager at SSE on one of these projects. The presentation, entitled "Could High Performance Conductors Be The Answer To Extending The Asset Life Of Your Existing Towers?" covered the Fort William - Fort Augustus 132 kV OHL upgrade on a 44 km circuit of PL16 towers (dating from the 1950s) through the Great Glen in the Scottish Highlands. SSE have leveraged the low-sag and capacity/weight advantage of ACCC conductor to deliver significant capacity increases with minimal tower reinforcements on a critical transmission line.

Apar completes 3rd ACCC installation in North East India

After successfully installing ACCC conductor on the 132 kV D/C Imphal (POWERGRID) - Yurembam (Imphal S/S - Manipur) & 132 kV D/C Agartala GBPP - Agartala transmission lines in North East India in 2018, Apar Industries Ltd. recently completed their third ACCC conductor installation in this region for Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd. (AEGCL).

The 9.5 km 132 kV project, known as Salakhati (BTPS) - Kokrajhar 2nd circuit, was completed with the support of contractor Ms. SSS Power Construction under Apar's CTC certified supervision. The ACCC conductor was manufactured by Apar. Hardware for the project was supplied by Tag Corporation limited - Chennai, and TES pullers and tensioners were used during installation.

AEGCL selected Casablanca size ACCC conductor to replace AAAC conductor in order to increase capacity.

North-East India is one of the most fascinating regions in India which consists of eight states, called collectively as 'the eight sisters.' The small sized region has one of the highest biodiversity density found anywhere in the world. In terms of Hydro Power, North East India has almost 40% of the country's total hydro potential. Likewise, the region also has abundant resources of coal, oil and natural gas for thermal power generation.

Though very little energy is consumed in this region, its growing ability to export power to a wider base is extremely important as demand for affordable, reliable and clean energy continues to grow. The ACCC conductor's added capacity and improved efficiency can support numerous initiatives to see this happen and make North East India the 'Power house of India.'
Naturgy Energy Group S.A. Completes ACCC Conductor Installation in Spain

Supported by engineering company Grup Soler and contractor Eiffage Energia, Naturgy Energy Group S.A. (formerly Gas Natural Fenosa), completed their 66 kV San Esteban to Muruarte de Reta line in Navarra, Spain. Naturgy Energy Group selected Brussels size ACCC conductor to increase the capacity of a renewable energy tie line first installed in ~2010 that had previously used LA 380 Gull size conductor.

The San Esteban I (30.42MW) and San Esteban II (42.05 MW) wind farms are currently in operation and are owned by ACCIONA and GNFR.  GNFR currently has two new wind farm projects, Tirapu and Barasoain, which will be located in the vicinity of the existing San Esteban I and II wind farms. The energy evacuation of these two new parks is planned through the recently upgraded San Esteban to Muruarte de Reta line which can now accommodate the anticipated >122 MW of generation capacity.

Installation began on May 1 and construction was completed on June 6 and energized June 14, 2019.  Lamifil provided the ACCC conductor, while PLP Belos provided ACCC hardware. TEMA equipment was used during installation. CTC Global's Master Installer, Ismael Dones was onsite to support the installation crew during the installation which included highway, railway and plantation crossings over hilly terrain.

CTC Global's Conductor Comparison Program CCP Software is Now Available Online

CTC Global is pleased to announce that our highly regarded Conductor Comparison Program (CCP) software is now available online, and is accessible at:
LINK  The new web-based version has all the features found in the Excel version, which has been replaced and will no longer be supported. The new version is designed to make it easier to use, and it also has some new features. Having CCP online will make it easier to keep it up-to-date with new wire files and other data, and to add improvements as they are made. Users will always know they have the current version every time they log in. CCP is also compatible with tablets.

All data required for calculations is entered on one page. Representative ACCC® Conductors are automatically selected based on the "base" conductor selected. Some fields are automatically entered based on earlier entries or saved user preferences. For example, latitude is entered from a web app based on the project location, and currency conversion is provided using real-time web app information. The user can edit most input data, including default and automatically selected data. Registered users can save multiple projects, recall them, modify them and save them as new projects or overwrite the existing projects.

CCP comparison output is displayed on a separate page. Frequently changed input used for sensitivity analysis is conveniently provided on that same page to minimize toggling between pages. Registered users can export reports that break out sections of the output to PDF and Excel files.

Registration to use CCP requires only a valid email address and password. Users may also use CCP as a guest however, saving and export features are only available to registered users.

Thank you for using our CCP. We welcome your feedback. For technical support, please contact [email protected]
