| 'Gut feeling' may be a hardwired 'sixth sense' |

A new study, published in the journal Science, has found that the process through which the gut communicates with the brain is much quicker than previously believed, relying on synapses more than it does on hormones.
Over the past 2 decades, the gut-brain axis has been thoroughly documented.
This started with a study in the early 1990s that showed that oral antibiotics can successfully treat a brain disorder called hepatic encephalopathy.
Fast forward to 2013, when research revealed that the bacteria in our guts influence anxiety and depression.
Even more recently, a review that was published only last month made it clear that gut bacteria can influence mood and emotions, highlighting their connection with a range of psychiatric disorders. Read on... |

| Latest research hints at predicting autism risk for pregnant mothers |
| |
Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute-led by Juergen Hahn, professor and head of biomedical engineering-are continuing to make remarkable progress with their research focused on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A recent paper authored by Hahn and Jill James from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in the journal Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders discusses their work on predicting with approximately 90 percent accuracy whether a pregnant mother has a 1.7 percent or a tenfold increased risk of having a child diagnosed with ASD.
Currently there is no test for pregnant mothers that can predict the probability of having a child that will be diagnosed with ASD. Recent estimates indicate that if a mother has previously had a child with ASD, the risk of having a second child with ASD is approximately 18.7 percent, whereas the risk of ASD in the general population is approximately 1.7 percent. Obsession and repetition are run-of-the-mill when you are raising a child on the spectrum, so is finding the hilarity through the days which prove to be most stressful. Laugher really is my best medicine. Our son Ryder was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) when he was three years old. He currently obsesses over a tiny red BB which he calls, "Red Ball," and his food of choice is definitely fries or pizza. During one particularly stressful day, I was able to find the humor in our predicament as the evening came to a close because it reminded me so much of the popular book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff.
If you give Ryder a large fry on the way to pick up dinner,
He is going to want a bottle of water to go with it.
When you hand him the bottle of water,
He spills a little on his shirt as he takes a drink and he becomes very upset.
So you give him the closest napkin available to wipe his shirt,

| Long-term study shows language's role in easing autism features |
| |
Social difficulties appear to wane as toddlers with autism mature into young adults, perhaps due in large part to improvements in language ability. Researchers presented the unpublished results yesterday at the 2017 International Meeting for Autism Research in San Francisco, California.
However, the findings do not mean that these individuals no longer have autism, the researchers caution.
"There's a lot of desire to talk about improvement or decreased severity, but I worry a little that that may be a little misleading," says Vanessa Hus Bal, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, who presented the findings. I am a mother of a 12 year old boy, diagnosed with moderate autism, almost nonverbal. I am having to work more hours, as result he will be under care of different care takers. I am searching for a GPS/Tracker where I could hear his surroundings and if needed talking to him to calming him down. He is not able to use a cell phone so this will not be an option. The third Saturday of every month, Fleet invites the Autism Spectrum Community to enjoy our museum through this special opportunity. Adults and families with children with autism can enjoy the Fleet's exhibit galleries in a quieter setting, an hour before regular open hours to the general public and with access to a special cool-off space. Visitors are welcome to stay and enjoy the museum all day. Admission includes a special IMAX film screening at 10 a.m. with the house lights on and a lower soundtrack volume.

The City of San Diego Park & Recreation Therapeutic Recreation Services program provides sports, recreation, leisure and outreach services to people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
Services include therapeutic recreation programs and adaptive sports opportunities. These address the special needs of individuals with disabilities who have difficulty accessing and participating in recreation opportunities offered to the general public.
Fall Calendar
Under the direction of Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, activities and services are designed to maintain or improve the physical, cognitive and social functioning of those who have limitations. The target population is children and adults, ages 3 and up, with any type of disability.
