Cases of sexual misconduct by teachers and other public school employees are documented all over San Diego County, from Vista and Carlsbad in the north to Chula Vista in the south. Records obtained as part of a broad Voice of San Diego investigation show some teachers were quietly reprimanded for years as complaints piled up. Other times, school districts moved teachers from school to school after finding they violated sexual harassment policies with students. Rather than terminate teachers, some school districts negotiated departure deals and paid them to leave, at times agreeing to keep substantiated misconduct secret from future employers. Read on...

While one main risk gene may make an individual susceptible to autism or another neurodevelopmental disorder, it is the whole collection of associated changes in their DNA that decides whether they develop it and how severe it becomes.

This was the conclusion that researchers arrived at after analyzing developmental, cognitive, and genome sequencing data of hundreds of people with known risk genes together with that of their parents and siblings.

They suggest that their findings explain why two people carrying the same risk gene, also known as the "primary mutation," can have very different symptoms of the associated neurodevelopmental disorder.

"For example," says senior study author Santhosh Girirajan, an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, "when a parent and child have the same primary mutation but only the child develops the disorder." Read on...

Children with autism are more likely to have both sleep problems and constipation than would be expected based on the prevalence of each of those conditions. Young autistic children are also unexpectedly likely to have both sleep and eating troubles.

The findings come from a large study of autistic children aged 17 months to 17 years who visited a network of autism clinics in the United States between 2010 and 20161. The researchers analyzed how often any of 12 conditions that commonly affect people with autism occur together in these individuals.

Understanding the relationships between conditions that frequently accompany autism could hint at their shared genetic origins, says co-lead investigator Ann Neumeyer, medical director at the Lurie Center for Autism at MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston. Genetic changes that contribute to the development of autism in young children also appear to be responsible for schizophrenia, according to a number of studies conducted over the years.

While the body of evidence is convincing, it's still based largely on western populations. A new study from Japan backs up the hypothesis that the two disorders share genetic underpinnings in people from around the globe, revealing more details on the biochemistry behind them.

"The strength of our study is the systematic head-to-head comparison of pathogenic CNVs and biological pathways between autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia," says senior author Norio Ozaki from Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine. Read on...

We currently have a need in the Miramar location for a part-time behavior technician (10-20 hours). This time includes some data collection and ongoing supervision. Our ideal candidate(s) is:

• RBT Certified a plus but not required
• Experienced working with children, teens, or young adults with autism
• Experienced using a naturalistic approach (E.g, art, cooking, play) to work on goals
• Patient and calm in their approach
• Able to work (at least) one day during the weekend (Typically 2-3 hours)
• Open and willing to learn about RDI and autism
• Currently enrolled in college or has some college courses completed

It is my pleasure to announce that the California Achieving Better Life Experiences (CalABLE) Act Board voted to approve TIAA Tuition Financing, Inc. (TFI) as its program manager at its August Board Meeting. This approval represents a significant step forward for the CalABLE program. The program manager is responsible for critical functions including managing the program's investment options, as well as keeping records for CalABLE enrollees.

TFI is a national leader in providing program management services for college savings plans, and currently serves as the manager for California's ScholarShare 529 program. TFI currently has more than $46 billion in total assets under management. Additionally, TFI will partner with Intuition ABLE Solutions (IAS), the nation's leading provider of record keeping services for ABLE programs. IAS currently oversees more than $15 billion in assets under management in both college savings (529) and ABLE (529A). TFI received the highest score of responses to CalABLE's open procurement request for proposals (RFP) in which responders were scored in five categories: Firm background, organization and compliance; Investment structure and experience; Administration, recordkeeping, banking and customer service; Education and outreach; and Costs.
