ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR

ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR VOLUNTEER SIGNUP
BEGINS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT 6:00 PM!

As you may recall, the Alternative Gift Fair is a holiday gift fair hosted at Evergreen Lutheran Church and sponsored by UMCE and six other local congregations.  Approximately 50 local, national and international nonprofits sell art, crafts, jewelry, clothes, cards and other items from around the world to support their projects around the world that help those in need.  The AGF motto is "Buy Once.  Gift Twice." When you buy a Christmas gift at the fair, it is a gift to your recipients as well as those in need served by the nonprofit vendors at the Fair. THIS YEAR, THE FAIR WILL BE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AND 11.

Thank you VERY much for those of you who have worked at the AGF in the past! We are again recruiting and coordinating volunteers from UMCE. Once again this year, we are providing a central sign up website using SignupGenius.  This way, at one time, you can see all the open volunteer opportunities and time slots.  As in the past, you may volunteer for Set-Up, Clean-Up, Cashier, Cashier Support, Volunteer Check-In, Van Driver, Parking Lot Attendant, Safety Assistant (medical person) and more! We need your help to make the Fair a success again this year!! THE SOONER YOU SIGN UP, THE MORE CHOICE IN JOBS YOU WILL HAVE!

Questions? Please call, email or visit Bill Graf at (303) 246-8330 and  [email protected].  It is easy to sign up online yourself.

To sign up online:
  1. Go to the AGF website http://www.gifttwice.org/  , then click on the "Volunteer" tab on the menu bar at the top, which will take you to a link to the SignupGenius website for the AGF.
  2. Review the volunteer jobs, the dates and time slots and then click the "Sign Up" button for job or jobs you select.  This will result in a check mark (√).  Repeat this for each job for which you wish to volunteer.
  3. When you have clicked all the jobs you want to volunteer for, please click the green "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page.  You do not need to set up a SignupGenius account to volunteer at the AGF.
  4. You will be taken to a place to enter information about yourself.  Please:
    1. Enter your name, email, phone number and any other required information; and
    2. Click to show your affiliation with the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.
    3. Do not sign up as a group using just one person's name.  We need the info for each separate volunteer so we can reach him/her if there are changes.
  5. Click "Sign Up Now!" to complete the sign up process.
  6. Click "Back to Sign Up" and  repeat the first two steps to be sure you are shown for the jobs you wanted
  7. Close out SignUpGenius.
  8. You should receive an email confirming the jobs you are signed up for.

SOCIAL MEDIA TASK FORCE
We Need Your Help!

UMCE's Church Council has commissioned a Social Media Task Force to examine and make concrete recommendations on how we may improve  (1) our outreach to the foothills community to tell them about our great church family, and  (2) our "inreach" to better communicate and connect with our past, present and future church family.

This may take the form of updating our UMCE website and online social media presence (Facebook, etc.), streaming or posting online sermons or parts of Sunday and other special services, establishing a dedicated audio and video broadcast to Fellowship Hall to allow for overflow at highly attended services (such as funerals) and other uses such as family Movie Night.

If you have experience or knowledge in design, marketing or technical  areas needed for this task force and would like to be part of its work, please contact Bill Graf by phone 303-246-8330 or email [email protected] .

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Ministry Jottings:  How Will the Church Be Lighted?

Several centuries ago in a mountain village in Europe, a wealthy nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to his townspeople.  He made a good decision. He decided to build them a church.  No one was permitted to see the plans or the inside of the church until it was finished.  At its grand opening, the people gathered and marveled at the beauty of the new church. Everything had been thought of and included.  It was a masterpiece.

But then someone said, "Wait a minute! Where are the lamps?  It is really quite dark in here.  How will the church be lighted?"  The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls, and then he gave each family a lamp, which they were to bring with them each time they came to worship.

"Each time you are here," the nobleman said, "the place where you are seated will be lighted.  Each time you are not here, that place will be dark.  This is to remind you that whenever you aren't at church, some part of God's house will be dark"

This is a special story which makes a significant point about the importance of our commitment and loyalty to the church.  The poet Edward Everett Hale put it like this:

I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

What if each of our members served the church, attended the church, loved the church, shared the church, and gave to the church exactly as you do?  What kind of church would we be? We are entering a season of acknowledging how important our church and congregation are, and what God is revealing to each of us for our roles in the months ahead. May Christ's wisdom and call to us as His disciples be our guide as we carry our lights forward.

In Christ's grace,
Pastor Deb

ADULT OFFERINGS

Sundays, October 7, 14 and 21 - from 9:30-10:15
Effective Confrontation and Conflict Resolution, Parts 2, 3 & 4
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
We will continue to explore research-proven methods for managing conflict and confrontation skillfully throughout the communication and problem-solving process. The presence of conflict is in itself neither good nor bad; it simply exists and should be expected. "True" conflict involves differences of beliefs, facts, values or strategies. The first rule of confrontation is: Do not confront another person if you do not intend to increase your involvement with him or her. We will explore how to know when to confront and how to go about doing so in an effective and healthy way. We learned two specific confrontation skills in Spring 2018 and will learn six more skills over these three sessions. We will be utilizing adult education materials from one of Lorna's published professional development programs: Collaboration in the Schools: Communicating, Interacting and Problem Solving.

Wednesdays, Oct. 10, 17, 24, 31 - from 9:30 - 11:30
Women's Bible Study
Wednesday Women's Bible Study is studying the book "Numbers: Learning Contentment in a Culture of More" by Melissa Spoelstra. This book and DVD study focuses on how the Israelites wandered through the wilderness grumbling, and how we can be content and stay authentic about the difficulties of life, and change our perspective from a posture of fear to a posture of faith. Please contact Jeanne Ambrosier with any questions at (303) 674-6377.

Tuesday, October 16 - starting at 6:30 am
The Men's Bagelry Fellowship Group
Please make plans to join The Men's Bagelry Fellowship Group on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Bagelry in Bergen Park, across from King Soopers. Contact Bill Graf at (303) 246-8330 for more information.

Sundays, October 28, November 4 and 11 - from 9:30-10:15
Bible Study: Verse Mapping
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
What is Verse Mapping? Verse Mapping is a method of studying the historical context, transliteration, translation, connotation, and theological framework of a verse in the Bible. Plain and simple? Verse mapping is getting real about studying the Bible. It is not just reading. It is researching everything you can in a verse to learn more about who God is and how God wants to speak to you through His word. We will learn to use a simple, five step process for Verse Mapping. The group will select Biblical passages that we will read and apply Verse Mapping. Six Simple Steps to change-your-life study time with God!
