Homelessness/Poverty Fact Sheet
from Family Promise National
  • The three most cited reasons for family homelessness are: 1) Lack of affordable housing, 2) unemployment, and 3) poverty.
  • 2.5 million children will experience homelessness this year in America.
  • 1 in 30 children in the United States experience homelessness annually.
  • Nearly 1.3 million school children were homeless in school year 2014-15.
  • Students experiencing homelessness are up to nine times more likely than their non-homeless peers to repeat a grade.
  • 51% of homeless children are under age 5 and, therefore, too young for school and are not counted.
  • 35% of all homeless persons nationwide are families with children.
  • Homeless families are often hidden from our view—they are living in shelters, cars, campgrounds, or doubled up in overcrowded apartments.
Our 1st Annual Home Sweet Home Volunteer Appreciation Picnic was a great success. 4 past families came to visit with and say thank you to the volunteers who helped them through this most trying of times.

"What a joy to have several of our former families with us and see them happy, independent and successful! In conversations with all of them, they all expressed their gratitude for Family Promise and all it has done to improve their lives! I am so proud to be part of such a marvelous faith based organization that helps children and families!"
Suzanne - Volunteer Coordinator at St. Mark's Episcopal Church

" Thank you so much for a wonderful gathering yesterday. Thank you, Allisa and your team for all you do to make a difference in the lives of the children and their families."
Maria - Volunteer Coordinator at Englewood United Methodist Church
