African American History Matters
Preservation of African American history takes real scholarship, advocacy and partnerships. These places matter!

More than 90 individuals of every age attended our program  “Dwellings of the Enslaved and Freed in the City and Town of Rye”  held on Sunday, June 9th at the 1838 Jay Mansion. Thank you to our superb speakers  Joseph McGill, Jr., Founder of The Slave Dwelling Project   and  2019 Sy Schulman Honoree, Dr. Larry Spruill, of Morehouse College  for two vibrant, empowering presentations and discussions. Earlier in the day, both guest speakers took the time to visit the Slave Quarters at the Bush-Lyon Homestead in Port Chester along with the African American Cemetery on North Street.

As a relative newcomer, we currently receive no annual funding from the City of Rye, County of Westchester or State of New York yet we serve almost 10,000 visitors each year and offer FREE field trips to schools. We rely solely on donations from individuals, foundations, grants and corporations to fund talks, workshops and preservation projects throughout our 23 acre park.

Consider making a tribute gift or dedicate your gift to a specific project or program. We are so very grateful for all you do!
