Stewardship Ontario's Proposed MHSW 
W ind Up Plan Submitted to RPRA
 
On Thursday, April 12, 2018, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change directed Stewardship Ontario to wind up the Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Program on December 31, 2020. On December 11, 2018, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks amended the timelines for the wind up of single-use batteries to June 30, 2020.
 
Upon wind up, materials collected under the MHSW Program will be managed according to an individual producer responsibility framework under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016.
 
Stewardship Ontario engaged stakeholders in consultations on proposed elements of its MHSW Wind Up Plan throughout March and April, 2019. 24 written feedback submissions were received and considered while Stewardship Ontario finalized its proposed Wind Up Plan.

As per Ministerial direction, Stewardship Ontario submitted its proposed MHSW Wind Up Plan to the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) on June 28, 2019.

RPRA is expected to post the proposed Wind Up Plan prior to its consultations with stakeholders in the coming months -- please check the RPRA and Stewardship Ontario websites for updates. The Minister anticipates RPRA will approve the plan no later than December 31, 2019.
