Ned Barnes Retiring after 26 Years of Outstanding Service
Mary Robosson Becomes Association's
First Woman President
Ned Barnes, president of the Palm Beach Civic Association, will retire on September 1 after 26 years with the organization.
The association hired Mr. Barnes as executive director in October 1993 and later appointed him president.
Chairman and CEO Bob Wright announced on Thursday that Mary Robosson will succeed Mr. Barnes as president.
As the organization enters its 76th season, she becomes the first woman to hold that title.

When Tara McCoy was named Good Samaritan Medical Center's CEO in October 2017, her goal was to take the hospital's high-quality patient care to the next level. "To take some of those services that we do really well, enhance them, look at ways to do creative partnerships with high quality providers and to really look at innovation," she said.

Palm Beach Banning Plastic Bags, Polystyrene Containers
The Town of Palm Beach has become the first county municipality to say goodbye to
single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers. The ordinance, which takes effect Dec. 12, applies to restaurants, drug stores, grocery stores, gas stations and vending trucks or carts. It also applies to individuals or groups who hold a special permit for events on town property.

Algal Blooms Prompt Palm Beach to Adopt Seasonal Fertilizer Ban
The toxic blue-green algal blooms of the past few summers were an environmental bellwether for coastal Palm Beach County, including the town. Palm Beach, like other coastal municipalities, is attacking the problem at its root. The Town Council has banned the use of fertilizers containing phosphorous and nitrogen each year during the rainy-season months, June 1 to Sept. 30. This year, the emergency ordinance took effect on June 11, the day it was unanimously adopted.

Squirmy worms, curious sharks and fish mugging for an underwater camera - it's just another day of research at Midtown Beach for Angela Witmer and her students from Palm Beach Atlantic University. On Thursday, Witmer, an associate professor of biology and oceanography at PBAU, along with four summer interns and grad students, donned a swimsuit and snorkel gear and waded slowly into the gentle surf by Worth Avenue.

Turtle Tuesday Beach Cleanups
Start Again
Gregg Beletsky, Founder of Turtle Tuesdays in 2013 when he was president of the Worth Avenue Association, is still leading the effort that includes a partnership with Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Mr. Beletsky, currently a director at Akris on Worth Avenue, told the Shiny Sheet that during August and October of last year, Turtle Tuesday volunteers removed more than 8,471 pieces of debris from the beaches.

Martin said it's a good example - though by no means the only one - of why the process for reviewing permit applications at Town Hall cries out for reform.

Palm Beach Town Council Approves Raises for General Workers
Weeks after approving pay hikes for police and firefighters, the Town Council has given the nod to raises for some general employees. The pay adjustments are meant to reduce employee turnover by making the town more competitive in the local job market, officials say.

Smoke and Heat in the
Town of Palm Beach
The Sawgrass Fire in the Everglades has consumed more than 42,000 acres as of Thursday this week. But since Wednesday, increasing ocean breezes from the northeast to the southeast at 9 mph to 14 mph have kept the smoke out of the Town of Palm Beach. Tuesday the smoke was as thick as smog here in town.
The current weather pattern is expected to continue for the next 4 - 5 days. By then, the Florida Forest Service is hoping to have the fire fully contained. Weather forecasts for the area are a 40% to 50% chance of rain for the next 5 days as we get back to the normal Summer weather pattern after the recent heat wave.

City of West Palm Beach Water Treatment Plant to Flush Lines
With Chlorine
The City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities Department will temporarily modify the disinfection process used to treat drinking water supplied to the Town from July 15 to August 2, 2019. Residents may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in the tap water during this period. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects.

Streets in Palm Beach Reopened After Power Pole Fire
All streets in Midtown that were closed because of a power pole fire and a loose wire have been re-opened, Palm Beach officials said.
The roads were closed for about an hour.

PBSO Agrees to Contract to Absorb South Palm Police
Police officers in the barrier-island town of South Palm Beach will soon carry the title of sheriff's deputy. The town council Tuesday voted 4-1 in favor of merging South Palm Beach's eight-member police force with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Florida City Pays Almost $600,000 Ransom to Secure Records
A Florida city council voted to pay hackers almost $600,000 worth of Bitcoin to hackers who took its computer systems offline a few weeks ago. The attack was affecting the city's online services, including email and 911 dispatches. In addition, the hackers encrypted the Palm Beach suburb's records.

Florida's Texting While Driving Ban Takes Effect Monday July 1, 2019
You shouldn't text and drive and beginning Monday July 1 in Florida you could be ticketed if you are caught. Last month Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 107 into law. It will make texting and driving a primary offense and gives an officer who sees you doing it the authority to pull you over and write a citation.

Thinking of Trying CBD? Be Careful, It Might be a Felony, Say Palm Beach Police
Palm Beach police have issued a public warning for anyone looking to get in on the CBD craze: Just say no. "They purchased it locally, not on the island, without any knowledge it was a felony," police spokesman Michael Ogrodnick said.
