Greetings!
I’m happy to present the third edition of the 2019 “From the Vault” newsletter. Happy Reading!
As you may recall, as 2018 was coming to a close, I invited everyone in our First Keystone Community Bank family to participate in an initiative called
CONNECT For Kindness
. We exhibited deliberate kindness to our customers, our colleagues, our communities, and even to ourselves. I am proud to report that we were wildly successful with 100% participation of our employees. We benefited in so many ways, including being able to support local food banks at the holiday season.
We then began to build on Kindness with another CONNECT initiative and this time it was all about LEARNING.
I know that our employees are our most valued resource and I support their growth. I am committed to helping to develop and enrich our employees’ lives and careers through learning. Not only do we want employees to grow by their own learning, I believe they have a lot to offer by teaching others. I chose learning for our second CONNECT project because I believe that learning and teaching will enhance our connections with each other, continue to break down silos, build on our commitment to kindness, and improve our communication skills as well.
Over a six-week period, we all focused on learning. During the first two weeks, employees focused on their own branch offices and departments. During weeks three and four, each department or branch taught something to their colleagues throughout the Bank. In weeks five and six, we educated the community, and vice versa. Employees were encouraged to teach and learn topics that are closely related to banking and also encouraged to have a little fun.
Some examples of what we learned: How banks make money – in easy to understand language; how to manage email effectively and tame your Inbox; and, how to request a free credit report and the importance of doing so.
Departments learned about each other as we followed the path of a loan from application through closing and retention, or as someone named it, “A Loan is Not Alone”. We learned about each of the job responsibilities in our Accounting and Finance departments and a little bit about the people behind those jobs. To help everyone more easily relate to each other across our 90 mile market span, each branch office created a short video introducing thei
r
location and employees to the rest of the Bank.
When it came to our communities, we learned about the mission of local organizations like Salvation Army and SMILE; conducted seminars for realtors; completed a banking presentation at the YMCA; presented “What It’s Like to Be a Banker” for Career Day at a local elementary school; and provided information on identity theft and building credit to college students.
As I mentioned, our employees were encouraged to have some fun with this project, and of course, they did. We developed a “Millennial Dictionary”, and a sequel especially helpful to post-Millennials; we learned how to not look like a tourist in New York City; how to decorate cupcakes like a professional baker; and someone even created a song playlist to keep us motivated throughout our 6-week learning journey.
To sum it up, at First Keystone Community Bank, we are committed to individual and professional growth by encouraging a habit of learning, which will help us as individuals and as a bank. Throughout our 6-week project, we learned, we connected with each other, we continued to be kind, and we had a little fun doing it!
Here at FKCB, we are building and improving our culture, beginning with KINDNESS and LEARNING. These two initiatives, together with what’s coming next, will continue to fuel our success at First Keystone Community Bank.
We will be launching our next CONNECT project soon and I’ll share the details with you in our next “From the Vault” newsletter. In the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful summer!
Warmest Regards,
Elaine

CHIP TECHNOLOGY HELPS REDUCE COUNTERFEIT FRAUD BY 76 PERCENT
|
|
Acceptance of EMV® chip cards among merchants continues to grow.
|
|
Swiping a card these days seems like a thing of the past as more EMV chip cards enter the wallets of U.S. cardholders. There were 509 million Visa chip cards out there alone at the end of March 2019, a 219 percent increase since October 1, 2015. And, according to the latest stats, that’s a good thing.
One of the leading factors encouraging the adoption of chip technology in 2015, was its effectiveness in reducing counterfeit fraud, which was the primary type of fraud in the United States at the time.
|
|
As of the end of March 2019, Visa’s network has shown continued growth across the number of chip cards and chip-enabled merchants, as well as payment and transaction volume since before the shift to EMV chip launched in October 2015.
