Greetings, Community Partners –
I hope all is well with each of you.
As we begin spring break, is hard to believe that at this time a year ago, we had begun the process of closing our locations temporarily due to the pandemic. In the midst of a situation unlike anything we have seen in higher education, our faculty, staff, and administrators worked diligently to convert most of courses to an online format, implement new campus procedures, and identify new ways to support students. Despite the challenges, our students had lower withdrawal rates than the previous spring and ultimately completed the semester with one of the highest success rates the system have seen in years. While the college has not been unscathed from the pandemic, the fact that our students continue to perform well is a testament to how special of a place Lone Star College is.
It is important to note that this success has been a collective effort. Not only have our faculty and staff been outstanding, but your ongoing support, as community partners, have provided a network of resources that have made a significant impact upon the lives of many of our students. We are thankful for you.
As you continue through the month, I wanted to share with you several updates.

Lone Star College Will Continue COVID-19 Protocols
|
|
As you may have seen, Governor Abbott lifted the state’s COVID-19 mandates. However, he did allow all businesses and institutions to develop and enforce their own protocols. With that stated, LSC will continue with our current safety procedures. These procedures include wearing masks, requiring health declaration forms at the check-in, and enforcing social distancing.
In addition, at this time, LSC has not determined how vaccinations will factor into protocols for gatherings, or in the case of close contact with confirmed positive cases, quarantining. However, the current plan is to maintain current procedures through the fall with an expectation to fully open in Spring 2022. However, the college will continue to pay close attention to the service area’s new cases, hospitalization rates, and the percentage the population that is vaccinated. Please continue to follow us on social media, as any changes to our current plans will be announced by our Chancellor or our Office of Governmental Relations.

Special Thank You to City Council Member Tarsha Jackson
|
|
We have had several incidents of cars crashing into the gates of our LSC-Houston North Greenspoint location. With the help of our campus officers, the North Houston District, and Precinct 1, we have identified excessive speeding down Greenspoint Rd as the main reason for these issues. While thus far, the damage has just been property related, many of the accidents have happened where our students often stand to catch the metro bus.
Fortunately, City of Houston City Council Member Tarsha Jackson of District B, has taken steps to address this issue. She started the process of getting speed bumps strategically placed to disrupt the dangerous traffic patterns that is the root cause of the aforementioned issues. We are very grateful to her commitment to serving our community and protecting our students.

While I admit that fundraising is not my greatest strength, I do want to encourage each of you to contribute our foundation fund. The great thing about LSC is that we provide a quality education at an affordable price. Therefore, while donations to colleges are often associated with large contributions, the truth is that gifts of any size can go a long way. For instance,
-
A $300 gift will pay for a student to take a class.
-
An $1,200 gift will cover an entire semester of tuition and fees for student.
-
A $6,000 gift will cover the tuition and fees for an entire degree for a student.
In addition, donations can also help us help students with outside-of-class supports. For instance,
-
• A $60 gift will help a student that qualify for Internet Essentials to have Internet at their homes for 6 months.
-
• A $50 gift will pay for an Instacart food delivery to a student.
This fund also allows us to help students with emergency funds, clothing assistance, and other types of services that enables students to focus upon their education. The great thing about our foundation is that Dr. Head has set it up where 100% of the donations go to students. All overhead costs for the foundation is covered by the college.
Please see below for more information about the Panther Pact fund.

|

Mentor Program \\ Student Testimony
“I believe it is great because my Mentor seemed genuinely concerned about how I was doing on a week to week basis in the course. She was always there for me if I had any questions or concerns. I gained her support in achieving my future plans, which she also helped me figure out.”
|
Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.
Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.
