RESIDENT NIGHTS IN THE DISTRICT
The LA Fashion District BID recently held "Resident Night" at Santee Village and The Griffin. As conveners, we try to bring together various perspectives in the district and believe that these Resident Nights are one way to connect with the people that live here. A strong residential community has the power to help advance initiatives that will help our community grow and thrive. Thus far, we have found that local residents know very little about BIDs, so this has been a good opportunity for us to educate the residents on how and why our organization exists, how we're funded, what our boundaries are, the services we offer, and what improvements we effectuate. A majority of the residents we've met are also downtown employees or downtown business owners, so we're getting multiple perspectives. It's been wonderful to provide the residents with an opportunity to connect with one another and begin to foster a real sense of community among our growing residential population.
PALOMA STREET HOUSING PROJECT
On April 14th, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously (10-0) in support of the final signed lease and sublease for temporary housing at 1426 Paloma Street. With a finalized lease, on-site improvements and outreach has begun. The facility is expected to open toward the end of this summer. The Paloma Street project will be the third A Bridge Home facility to open in the city, and the second in Council District 14 . Click HERE for more information about the Paloma Street Project.
MITCHELL CASE SETTLEMENT, HOMELESS COUNT UP 16%, AND ILLEGAL DUMPING IN FASHION DISTRICT UP 80%
Earlier this month, Executive Director, Rena Leddy, sent out an important update about the serious issues we're dealing with in Downtown LA, and their visible effects here in the Fashion District. If you have not read that update, we encourage you to take the time to read through it carefully HERE . It is vital, as a property owner and stakeholder in the district, that you receive this information and have a thorough understanding of these issues.
CCA's DTLA INSIGHTS
Central City Association (CCA) recently launched an interactive data portal focused on DTLA, called DTLA Insights . CCA and downtown BIDs will utilize this data portal to showcase information supporting our advocacy priorities, and communicating our stakeholders' impacts on Downtown and the city. This tool will allow for more data-rich content and research to support advocacy efforts, engagement and events, and is intended to complement CCA's members’ analytics and research. Data sets and information on DTLA's top priorities include: Housing, Homelessness, Mobility, Economic Development, and Livability.
LA's FIRST 2-WAY BIKE LANE IS HERE
LA got its first official two-way bike lane on a city street -- and it runs through the Fashion District -- as part of the city's ongoing efforts to make the streets safer and more pedestrian-friendly. The changes are connected to the city's  Vision Zero initiative, which aims to lower the number of traffic deaths in Los Angeles until they are eliminated altogether. The lane, which was already there, runs along Spring Street, between 3rd and 9th. While some bikers had been using it as a two-way lane for a while, the latest upgrades made it official. The changes include bike signals that are triggered by sensors in the pavement, pedestrian crossings, and bicycle turn boxes on 5th and 7th streets.
METRO BLUE LINE CLOSURE
Two Downtown LA Metro stops were closed earlier this month in order to begin rail service on the Expo and Blue lines at the 7th Street/Metro Center Station in the Financial District and the Pico Station near LA Live. The station closures will allow Metro to lay new track and make repairs necessary to complete a $350 million project aimed at  speeding up service on the Blue Line . The Blue Line is expected to fully reopen in September, but all Expo Line stations are expected to be up-and-running in late August. Once work is complete, Metro expects to shave about 10 minutes off the time of an end-to-end trip on the Blue Line. Expo Line riders should also benefit from track replacement in the 7th Street/Metro Center tunnel and along Washington Boulevard. The work is aimed at ensuring trains move more smoothly through the segments shared by the Expo and Blue lines, reducing backups and making service more reliable. Metro will alert riders to any schedule changes or project updates on its  New Blue website .
