Last summer,
High School English teacher Concetta Hurley began working for Hamptons - based
Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue to repay the organization for Bodie. Hurley adopted the yellow Lab mix after nine years of living without a family pet. She said this amazing pooch brought her family so much love and joy, she had to give something back. So she became a foster and opened her house to dogs looking for their forever home.
Gimme Shelter places dogs in foster care while awaiting adoption. It says this helps staff match potential owners with the correct animal based on temperament and energy level. Gimme Shelter brings animals from high kill shelters all over the country to New York for placement in loving homes.
Hurley has fostered a total of six dogs, caring for them from pick-up to adoption anywhere from one to five weeks. She has assisted in the adoption of six additional dogs over various weekend stays. The hardest part, according to Hurley, is surrendering the dog after he or she has been adopted. She reminds her kids that they do this to help bring joy to other families and that the rigorous adoption process ensures the animal will be happy in its new home.
Hurley says this fostering experience holds many lessons for her kids. "Some of their stories are so sad; it's rewarding helping an innocent animal. I also like the fact that it teaches my children compassion, responsibility, and kindness. What better way to model that?"

Gimme Shelter is always looking for foster families with a little time, compassion, and a fenced-in yard. Hurley says that fostering a pet not only helps the one in your home, but makes room in the shelter for another to be saved.
