MOA and AOA at Jaseng International Conference in Seoul South Korea
The Michigan Osteopathic Association Immediate Past President Dr. Lawrence Prokop has returned from a recent trip to the 2019 Jaseng International Conference on Manual Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. The theme of the event was "Implications and Future Strategy of Manual Medicine for Spine and Joint Disorders." Dr. Prokop lectured on the Advantages, Similarities and differences between Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy and Chuna Manipulative Therapy. The trip included interaction with his South Korean counterparts and touring a neutraceutical manufacturing plant and a traditional Korean neutraceutical pharmacy.
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) was represented by AOA President Dr. William Mayo. Both Dr. Prokop and Dr. Mayo received honorary membership in the Jaseng Medical Foundation.
The Jaseng Institute has an ongoing relationship with several organizations here in the United States. Jaseng's Extramural Partners include the AOA, the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), Michigan State University (MSU) and the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM).

MOA Board Members Serve as speakers at MSUCOM Summer Symposium
Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) hosted the Summer Symposium 2019 in Traverse City, MI. The symposium included three Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Board of Trustees:
- Adam Hunt, DO, MHS, served as conference co-chair & moderator.
- David Best, DO, presented on Pain and Symptom Management focusing on Risk reduction and effective treatment.
- Stephen Bell, DO, also presented on Pain and Symptom Management.
The Pain and Symptom Management session reviewed the CDC Guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain, methods for screening and diagnosing opioid use disorder.

Crain's Honors Ewa Matuszewski with Health Care Hero award
Ewa Matuszewski has been honored with the 2019 Health Care Hero in the Executive category by Crain's Detroit Business. Matuszewski has been an advocate for integrated medical and behavioral health care long before it was popular and a proponent of patient-centered medical homes before payers started rewarding primary care physician groups for the practice of managing patients' continuum of care.
As CEO and co-founder of Rochester-based MedNetOne Health Solutions, Matuszewski helped independent physicians navigate the murky early days of managed care contracting since the early 1980s. Currently, Matuszewski is the Director of the Michigan Osteopathic Association's (MOA) HealthCare Partners of Michigan (HCPM) Physician Organization. Her involvement includes representing the MOA on a plethora of committees and issues. "Over the years I've learned that alone, we can do so little; but working together, we can achieve much. That's why neighborhoods and community organizations must be included in the fabric of healthcare delivery'" said Matuszewski

The MOA will host the 15th Annual Autumn Scientific Convention at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, Nov. 8 - 10, 2019. Network with colleagues, visit the Scientific Research Exhibit Competition and visit with exhibitors during a compelling and educational weekend. This event has seen tremendous growth since its humble beginnings in 2004. Educational CME opportunity to earn 24-26 AOA Category 1-A credits. The MOA has a limited number of rooms reserved with a group rate discount at the Amway Grand Plaza (link is below). The Scientific Research Exhibit competition is accepting submissions.

2018 Drug Utilization Report Posted on MAPS website
The number of opioids dispensed in Michigan decreased in 2018 as more prescribers participated in the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS). Compared to 2017, opioid prescriptions dispensed fell by 15 percent while the overall number of schedule 2-5 controlled substance prescriptions decreased by 11.5 percent.
During the same time period, the state saw the MAPS program registration rate, which includes prescribers, pharmacists and delegate users, increased by more than 134 percent.

NPR features story on MSU Organizational Psychology PhD candidate who proposes a new research poster design
National Public Radio featured a story about a revolutionary idea in scientific research posters. In an effort to better communicate via poster presentation, Mike Morrison has adopted graphic design principles. Basically, keep it simple. Utilizing a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupery-"Perfection is not when you have nothing to add. It's when you have nothing to take away"- Morrison rethinks academic poster design and applies principals from billboard design.

Chart: Doctors top health care providers in education and training
As efforts to expand non-physician clinicians' scope of practice continue, the AOA and AMA examine training requirements for different professions.
In recent years, many different types of non-physician clinicians have sought to practice medicine independently of physicians, despite the fact that doctor training requirements are significantly more rigorous and comprehensive.
So far this year, the AOA helped defeat scope-of-practice expansion efforts in Indiana, Hawaii and New Hampshire. The AOA opposes any legislation or regulations that would authorize the independent practice of medicine by an individual who has not completed the state's requirements for physician licensure. (
