Your ASA president says ...

Steve Jobs' last words are reported to have been, "Wow! Wow! Wow!"

Well, as I write this, my final President's Message, I can't help but think Steve stole those words right out of my mouth. Looking back on the strides your ASA and the Board of Directors have made during my two years in office, I can see so many reasons to say, "Wow!" This is the stuff that makes serving as ASA President more worthwhile than you can imagine.

Our Community Outreach Committee -- after being dormant for several years -- has at last picked up a head of steam and found its focus. With several schools expressing strong interest in having ASA volunteers make presentations that encourage students to choose careers working in the trades, the committee members have been busy creating promotional brochures, a slide show, and other materials aimed at getting across our message: "Build a Better World Working in the Trades."

Speaking of our committees, I've seen significant growth in the number of ASA members who've joined one of them in the past few months. In my January 1 President's Message, I asked that you make joining an ASA committee one of your New Year's resolutions ... and a bunch of you did! As we're a volunteer-driven association -- and it takes a lot of people to put on our amazing events -- we can always use more committee members. Maybe you should make volunteering be your Mid-Year resolution.

Speaking of growth, attendance at our workshops, seminars, and other events has grown steadily -- so steadily, in fact, that quick sell-outs are the norm. A recent example was our June 27 Meet Your G.C. event hosted by Clark Construction. The first invitation went out at noon on May 20, and by 5:00 p.m. that day, we had 68 sign-ups (more than we had space for, unfortunately!). Lesson learned: If you want to attend an ASA event, sign up as soon as you get the email.

Speaking of those emails, most of you by now have gotten to know the voice behind them. Diana Clark has played a key role in increasing our association's momentum since she joined our staff a year ago. The Board of Directors was pretty smart when it took Executive Director Nancy Grimes' recommendation to hire Diana

Well, I could go on and on, but I'll end by calling attention to the impressive roster of accomplishments of ASAC at the state level. Read this list here , and you'll see why our ASA advertisements say, "Join the Association That's Working for You!"

Thank you, everyone, for making these past two years great ones!

Do you rely on independent contractors? Watch out!

The California Supreme Court’s ruling in Dynamex Operations West, Inc. v. Superior Court of Los Angeles (Dynamex), along with the potential passing of AB5, may and probably will make it almost impossible to classify workers as independent contractors . Read what you need to know here .
"An Evening to Remember" will be ... an evening to remember!

Picture this: You arrive at the Catamaran Resort on July 26 to enjoy a lively welcome reception sponsored by Kyne Construction , where you sip a glass of bubbly compliments of TSIB inc . or enjoy your favorite cocktail. You're presented with a special gift (it's a surprise) offered by Swinerton . Relaxed and hungry, you enter the Aviary Ballroom and are amazed by the gorgeous table settings punctuated with tropical centerpieces provided by Raken . As you enjoy a delicious dinner compliments of Chula Vista Electric , you sip wines thanks to Dynalectric San Diego . As dinner winds to an end, the room darkens and you're dazzled by a Polynesian floor show sponsored by Rossin Steel while you savor a special dessert compliments of Western Fire Protection . Just for good measure, you let a couple of sweet treats from J&W Lumber melt in your mouth.

And then the real show begins: New officers are installed and the award-winners are announced by Aloha Taylor, who is sponsored by Turner . Each winner accepts a trophy donated by Southland Electric and RBTK, LLP Certified Public Accountants . Throughout the program, you're dazzled by the audio/visual show made possible by DPR Construction .

Have you RSVP'd for this amazing evening yet? If not, you can do so right now by clicking HERE .... (Thank you to our invitation sponsor, Clark Steel Fabricators .)
Should kids grow up to work in the building trades?

If you're a subcontractor and you answered "yes" to that question, would you be willing to share your story of working in the trades with students at schools throughout the San Diego region?

The ASA Community Outreach Committee members are setting up a speakers bureau of subs they can call on when a school wants a presentation. You would be provided with a slide show and other promotional materials to use during your speech ... but most of all, you would be telling the kids of your own, personal experiences: How and why did you enter this industry, how did you choose your particular trade, what do you enjoy the most, and so on.

Would you like to learn more? Contact diana@sandiegoasa.org with your questions or to arrange to come to our next Community Outreach Committee meeting.
Between September 1 and September 30, 2019, recruit as many new ASA members as you possibly can.

Why? Because for every member you bring in during our September Membership Blitz, you'll get a Visa gift card.

If your new member pays $1,500 in dues for a full year, they'll receive special recognition at our Fall Golf Tournament, and you'll be rewarded with a $200 Visa gift card.:

If your new member opts to pay pro-rated dues for only the 10 months that will be remaining in our membership year, you'll still receive a $100 Visa card for bringing them in.

Either way, you're richer with every member you recruit. So get ready to start blitzing!
A gentle reminder

Yes, another year has raced by, and it's time for every ASA member to renew membership. If you haven't yet taken care of this, please do so as soon as possible.

You may pay by logging in to the ASA website HERE; you may give your credit card information to Nancy Grimes over the phone at 619-825-9552; or you may mail your check to San Diego ASA.

We so appreciate your participation in ASA. Together, we're making our subcontracting community stronger than ever.
Got something to say? Say it!

See "Hot Off the Press" at the top of this newsletter? It's a forum for ASA members -- you! -- to present educational information to our readers, and it's a subtle promotion of your company. If you'd like to see your article in a future issue, contact diana@sandiegoasa.org .
The business networking event you've been waiting for ... is almost here

Have you purchased your ticket to attend the ASA General Contractor & Public Agency Showcase on September 25 at the Bali Hai? This will be a great opportunity to meet with the buyers of your services.

Sponsor opportunities are available, too. We need your support to put on this important event! (Thank you, Dynalectric , for signing up early as a Gold Sponsor.)

And, a few complimentary display tables are still available for G.C. and public agency exhibitors. Look who's already reserved a table: ETC Building & Design, Turner, DPR Construction, C&S Companies, Balfour Beatty, UCSD, SANDAG, SDUSD, Hensel Phelps, McCarthy, and San Diego International Airport. Won't you join them?

You can buy a ticket, reserve a display table, and become a sponsor all by clicking HERE . Do it!
Legislative update: What's happening with AB 456?

The Public Contracts - Claim Resolution bill that would delete the sunset on the process by which claims are resolved quickly has hit a roadblock. Even though it proceeded smoothly through the California Assembly, the bill was put on the Senate Appropriations Committee's suspense calendar due to potentially high costs. ASAC will be providing updates in August. Stay tuned.
