The Partners Post - June 2019
A Principal's Perspective
Many research studies support the importance of afterschool and summer programs for students of all ages. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of studies that focus on why summer school is important-- academic regression, social-emotional needs, the need to provide meals for children through these programs--to name just a few. Over the years, from the point of view as an educator, it is common sense to me that our kids need their schools open in some capacity in the summer months. My views about summer programs are a combination of what I have read, but mostly what I have experienced and witnessed firsthand as our need for our summer programs in Covington have evolved and become more important than ever.

Ever since I began working in Covington Independent Public Schools 20 years ago, I have always taken an interest in afterschool and summer programs. My experience includes being an employee for afterschool and summer programs, a developer of afterschool and summer programs from the ground up, a coordinator of afterschool and summer programs, an administrator who developed afterschool and summer programs for various schools, and presently an administrator who supports afterschool and summer schools in his own school and district. Summer programs were in full swing in Covington 20 years ago but did not yet have the type of academic focus our programs have today. I have been able to see how these traditional programs have evolved over the years. Until about 10 years ago, our summer programs mostly focused on physical education and fun activities for the kids. While these types of activities are vital and still a major focus in both our afterschool and summer programs, we have seen the need to provide an academic focus for our kids. This focus is mostly due to what some might refer to as summer slide or summer learning loss

Many administrators and teachers will tell you, summer slide happens. We collect the data each fall that proves it is real. Unfortunately, most consistent with the research is we see most learning losses with our students who already... Fore!
Don't worry, it's not too late. There is still plenty of time to grab your choice of three friends, family members, or colleagues and join us for some fun on the green. Next month, we will hold our second annual mini-golf outing and tenth annual golf outing. “The golf outing has become a signature community event. It is a day of fun and networking to benefit the students and families of Covington set at the amazing backdrop of Traditions Golf Club,” said Executive Director Stacie Strotman. “We are also excited to bring back our mini-golf outing this year—and for two nights! The fun and unique event provides a way to support Covington Partners even if you aren’t a pro on the green.”

Program Spotlight: bornlearning communities
Children are natural-born learners, and parents can use opportunities every day to give their children the right start for learning. Families in Covington can get strategies to help their children's natural curiosity about the world through bornlearning communities. Sponsored by Covington Partners and Covington Independent Public Schools, bornlearning communities is a four-week program of workshops designed to promote the importance of early learning and early intervention. The summer program is a jump start to the Bornlearning Academy sessions at James E. Biggs in the fall. Kindergarten readiness data show that less than half of Covington students start kindergarten ready to learn."I think these programs are critical to showing folks that learning begins even before birth and gives people the tools and knowledge they need to help their children start kindergarten prepared," said Kerry McHugh, family resource center coordinator at John G. Carlisle Elementary School.

The sessions are open to families with children who are five years old and under. Participants learn how to turn everyday moments such as grocery shopping, cooking, and doing laundry, into learning opportunities for their children.

The remaining summer sessions will be July 9 and 23, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Eastside Neighborhood Early Childhood Education Center, 1001 Scott Boulevard. Click HERE to register or for additional information.
