Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute Student Recognized at Transportation Research Forum Annual Conference

Fecri Karanki was awarded the 2019 Graduate Student Best Paper Award at this year's Annual Transportation Research Forum in Washington DC. An introduction of his paper titled The Effects of Airline-Airport Business Relationshp on Airport Efficiency: A Moral Hazard Problem? can be reviewed below.

"The most common form of the bilateral vertical relationship between airports and airlines in the US is the use of agreements. The three types of airport use agreements in the U.S. are the residual method, the compensatory method, and the hybrid method. The aim of this paper is to determine whether these three business agreements affect airport operational efficiency. Using 2009 to 2016 yearly data of 59 U.S. hub airports, we find that airports with residual-type agreements tend to have lower operational efficiency. This implies that although signatory airlines expect to strengthen its own operation through a residual-type agreement with an airport host, increased airport inefficiency may undercut any potential benefits of residual agreements.
