MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greeting Dreuxites!
THEN

Over 40 alumni and friends from Dreux gathered in San Antonio,Texas April 4-7, 2019 to renew friendships and make new ones. As with the past 10 reunions, this one was a dandy! I know you have heard in many ways that God, family, and friends are the things in life that count; these reunions are just one way to reconnect with life-long friends and sometimes family. The connection is electrifying! The connection of being an overseas brat is powerful and even if you have not been to a reunion before, you will be welcomed because we want to see you! Please plan on coming to the next reunion that is being planned for 2021. Information will be provided on the Dreux AHS Alumni website. Check it out if you have not already done so. You can just look us up on Google as well.

I want to acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved in making the reunion a success. The Reunion Committee Chair (Shari Murphy Koziol '64) and co-chair Marilyn Hutto Turner '62 did an outstanding job and the decorations by Patricia Beard Sicinski '62 and Lani Pew Tower '62 were a hit. All registrants were met and signed in by the gracious, friendly, and helpful Marcus Cox '64 with help from other Dreuxites from time to time. Two-stepping, line dancing, and rocking to old tunes was enjoyed by all.

 NOW
Over the past several years the Association was led by President Charles Brantley '68 who was assisted by Vice-President Nonna Mann Carlson '64 and funds were administered by the Treasurer, Jim Adams '66. To these and Board members, Sally Downing Thomas '64, Rebecca Huddleston Pelletier '63, and Willy Brewer Taylor '65  along with the Director of Alumni Affairs, Vicki Key '67, we owe a debt of gratitude for keeping the Association rolling along. Many thanks to all of you and to those that attended the reunion for making it a success! We are already planning for the next one to be held in 2021. More later after the new Reunion Chair, Helen Council Miles '61, and her committee research potential spots and dates.

Even if you have not, or cannot, attend the reunion, Dreuxites are interested in what you have been doing since graduation. Thus, Vicki Key and I will be sending out a questionnaire to all that attended Dreux to gather information and a current photo of you to get a glimpse of your life. Our goal is to put together a life after Dreux yearbook type of publication that will provide information on all Dreuxites that are interested in being included. When it is sent out please provide as much information as you desire for inclusion into the publication. It will be another part of our shared history. Many thanks.

That is all for now but read the rest of the newsletter for additional information, new officers, and news about members among other interesting Dreux tidbits. I am honored to again serve the Association. If you have any questions, please contact me or any of the other Association Officers. We are here to help and keep the Association rolling by gathering new members and engaging those that already are.

Until later.

Paul R. Krausman
President, Dreux American High School Alumni Association

NOTE:  The current officers and board members are listed in the side bar of the newsletter.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Shari Murphy Koziol '64

I attended Dreux as a sophomore during the 61/62 school year.
THEN

I cannot tell my story without Dreux...going to Dreux, living in the dorms, making personal connections, hanging out or dancing in the Teen Club every day, bus rides to Paris on Saturday, the easy access and influence of culture and art, the prom at the Eiffel Tower.....was a benchmark time of my life. But I didn't really know that in 1962. I knew the great loss when I had to move back to the states. But it wasn't until I noticed that Dreux never really disappeared that I understood my incredible fortune. Dreux lists in the top 5 things for which I will be forever grateful!

After Dreux, I moved to Offutt Air Force Base, SAC Headquarters, outside of Omaha, Nebraska. I did finish my last two years of high school there. 85% of the school were military kids which made "resettlement" easy even if I was a bit resentful! I make no comparisons to Dreux...it is apples and oranges. I made dear friends who are still with me today. In fact, in a complete serendipitous happening, my son married the daughter of one of those friends after meeting her years later.

I went to college in Kearney, NE at what is now Nebraska State, and majored in journalism and psychology. I didn't really pick up on the fact that college was NOT a continuation of high school but I had a great time! I was dating a Senior...here is a fun story...he was the pledge trainer of his fraternity and he made the pledges sing "Pretty Woman" under my dorm window! I floated for days! He graduated and we married ....and I didn't go back. If I were the type that had regrets, that would be the biggest one. I would walk up to 1966 Shari, shove her off the bar stool, and yell "WAKE UP, GIRL!!!"

After a short stay in Tucson, we moved to Midland, Texas where I stayed for 22 years. I remember thinking after I had been there 4 years, "isn't it time to move again!?!?" But we didn't and life was great with two children, lots of volunteer work, a successful business, and wonderful friends. My first experience of being part of a long term community. Midland is where my children call home and we are still very connected there. Life took a radical turn for the worse in the early 90's. I found myself getting a divorce and needing to get a job for the first time at 44. Picture here the emoji that means "WHOA!!!"
NOW

Midland, with an oil based economy, was in a bust part of the boom/bust cycle and I moved to Houston. It was a real learning curve to be in a large city and working but I was able to transition volunteer experience into employment in the non profit world and I am still there. Recently, I left my position and started a consultancy with nonprofit and foundation expertise. I love my clients and love no longer counting vacation days to see if I can go on a trip!

My son, Kris, is an attorney with an oil company and has lived in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia for 14 years. With him are Melissa and their two girls, Willa and Annie. They live on a company compound that looks surprisingly like the military bases you and I grew up on. I meet them several times a year when they are in the states or in Europe. It is a 9 hour time difference but because of electronics, facetime, etc., we talk all the time. My daughter, Keira has 4 children and lives in Mill Valley, outside of San Francisco. Somehow she manages to run all the carpools and birthday parties while managing a large clientele for custom men's clothing.

After years in a house, last year I moved to a high rise apartment, and I love it!!! I feel like I am living a life somewhere between Eloise at the Plaza and Auntie Mame on Beekman Place! Less enthusiastic than I are Murphy and Brody, my beloved Kerry Blue Terriers. They like to wait until I am crashed on the sofa before glaring at me with wagging tails....the universal sign for "take us out!". Friends and family and movies and books and happy hours and dinner parties fill out my list of "Favorite Things".

Thanks for this moment of all about me....and as we know. Military brats never say goodbye!

T-SHIRTS!

Jerry Tune '63 found a website called "Wander I Store" where you can buy shirts for most military schools.  They list the price as $19.95.  He posted this information on our Dreux Facebook Group Page, but for those that aren't on Facebook or didn't see his post, I thought I would include this information in the newsletter in case anyone is interested in ordering a shirt.  See photos below for what they shirts look like, but do have a few different shirt styles. Here is the link to the website: Wandering I Store

PLEASE NOTE:  The Dreux American HS Alumni Association is not associated with or affiliated with this company and gets no money from the sales.  We do not guarantee the quality of the shirt, etc. however several of our alums have purchased them and are very happy with the shirt.  They say they are true to size based on their experience. The company also has shirts for military bases too i.e. Dreux and Evreux. AS A SIDE NOTE:  The person that owns the company was actually born at Evreux!  I thought that was interesting.

NEED BIOS!!

I NEED MORE BIOS!

Thank you to those who have sent in bios for the Alumni Spotlight and Faculty/Staff Spotlight feature of the Newsletter.  But I need MORE!  If you would  like to send in a bio on yourself, that would be great!  DON'T BE SHY!!  It can be as short or as long as you would like, but basically I am looking for the following information:

What you did after you left Dreux, i.e. schools attended, military
What you do/did for a living
Where all have you lived after Dreux
Tell us about your family, hobbies and any community involvement
Talk about any special memories you have from your time at Dreux
I would also need a "Now" head shot photo (jpg) of you as well.

I hope to hear from everybody!  Send your bios and "Now" photo to Vicki Key at VickiK3275@aol.com.

As always, we GREATLY appreciate any and all support! Your support is what keeps our  association going and helps fund the costs to find former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, reunion costs, etc.  We can't do it without you!

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION

If your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key.  I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory!

COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!

The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook has been a lot of fun!  Former friends are reconnecting, uploading photos from Dreux, and having general discussions about the time spent at Dreux.  We also do New Find Alerts when we locate former classmates that have not yet been found as well as Sad News Alerts when we discover that a former classmate has passed.

I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved.  If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!

If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page so you can request to join:  Dreux American High School Group Page

Missed a prior Dreux AHS Newsletter?
You can view them on the Dreux website

In case you missed receiving any of the past Dreux AHS Newsletters for whatever reason, they are archived and available to view on our Dreux AHS website.  Just click on the link on the front page of the website (www.dreuxalumni.org) to access them.

PLEASE remember that you can always opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would like, but PLEASE do not tag or report it as SPAM.  That really hurts our ability to continue to do these newsletters using Constant Contact and there are many people who enjoy getting them. We certainly hope you don't opt out, but it is certainly your choice.  I try not to overwhelm everybody with them, but keep in mind that just prior to Reunions, we may do them more than we normally do.  THANKS!

Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967.  The first graduating class was 1961.  The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association.  There have been 10 major reunions over the past 24 years, the last being held in April of 2019 in San Antonio, TX
