Dear CTEWC Friends,
This month we celebrate founder James Keenan's recent recognition with the Catholic Theological Society of America's
John Courtney Murray Award
for distinguished theological achievement. His citation and acceptance speech, both of which underscore the significance of CTEWC, are available via the North American regional update below. We also congratulate Sr. Marie Rose Ndimbo on the successful June defense of her dissertation on hope, forgiveness and good governance. Sr. Marie Rose is the 6th recipient of the CTEWC African Women's Scholarship to complete her degree. Finally kudos to editors Antonio Autiero and Laurenti Magesa, whose latest volume in the CTEWC series,
The Catholic Ethicist in the Local Church
, won a Catholic Press Award this month (Catholic Social Teaching category).
We are grateful to see members commenting on recent Forum entries, and we are working to make topical searches of back issues readily available. In July's Forum, Emilce Cuda critiques the exploitative function of certain laws and powers of the state in Latin American contexts. Hoa Dinh, SJ, reviews the preparatory discernment processes underway in anticipation of Australia's first plenary council since Vatican II, and Tina Beattie analyzes the Congregation for Catholic Education's recent document on gender theory. In the African Forum, Peter Knox, SJ, highlights promise and perils of urban dwelling in light of the inaugural UN-Habitat Assembly recently held in Nairobi. New North American Forum contributor Aline Kalbian reflects on the
political, ethical, and existential meanings of space in light of a recent jury duty experience.
Finally, the Junior Scholars Forum, Geevarghese Kaithavana reflects on Amoris Laetitia through the lens of the Syro-Malankara church in India.
A reminder to readers that there is no First issued in August, we resume publication on September 1. On the heels of the G-20 summit in Osaka, we pray that world leaders be guided by commitments to peace with justice and care for our common home.

North American Regional Report |
Each year at the annual conference for the Catholic Theological Society of America, a scholar is honored with the John Courtney Murray award for excellence in the discipline of theology. In presenting the award, CTSA President
Paul Lakeland described
this year's honoree as a theologian who "grew up in Brooklyn...spent years studying philosophy," and who is "giant in advancing a global agenda for theological inquiry..." helping North American theologians to recognize "much of what the future holds for the work of theological and ethical scholarship, north and south of the Equator." Excited whispers bounced about the hotel ballroom as those present realized that this year's winner of the John Courtney Murray Award, the highest honor bestowed on a Catholic North American theologian, was our own beloved Jim Keenan.
In his acceptance speech
Jim movingly described how his extraordinarily close relationship with his brother Bobby helped him find his own voice as a child, and inspired him to amplify the voices of others by creating the global network we all benefit from today: Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church. "I realized I could connect others so that they could find their voice."
Members of CTEWC present at CTSA joyfully celebrated with Jim that night, and we invite our friends and colleagues across the world to join us in congratulating him for this well-deserved honor.
