Are the right people in the right positions at your company? Or as Jim Collins would say in
Good to Great, the right people in the right seats on the bus. Wearing different hats is one thing, but when a hat does not fit, it can hinder or even cripple you.
Take a look at this current job opening, which is posted on Craigslist:
First, in my opinion, marketing and accounting use totally opposite sides of the brain. One is
creative, the other is
analytical. Second, I have worked with many analytical types and none of them are the outgoing, event planning people this job is looking for.
Again, in my opinion, they are going to have a very hard time filling this position with someone who meets the requirements in this description. Either marketing or bookkeeping is going to suffer with this hire.
Do you have someone in your organization who is performing multiple roles, which are opposite of each other, just to save a few dollars? You may be costing yourself in the name of productivity by doing so. When I started MMD, I did everything because I had too. As soon as I could afford a bookkeeper, I retained the services of one. She loved doing what I hated, and she was great! Now, I could focus on doing what I love, Marketing my clients' businesses, products and services!!
Take a look at your staff with multiple duties or even yourself and ask, can somebody do this part of the job better, faster and possibly more economically than I can? Will the job performance of your marketing-bookkeeper increase if you outsource or bring on a part-time person to handle the marketing?
Just something to think about when you do your next employee evaluation, or job description posting!
Sincerely,
~ Allen Jernigan, CEO
