Family Medicine Caucuses
at MSMA Annual Meeting
In connection with the Mississippi State Medical Association Annual Meeting, MAFP hosted a family medicine caucus Friday, August 17, in downtown Jackson. The dozen members who gathered discussed proposed resolutions, the candidates for office, and other issues arising before the body. MAFP staff members Kristen Kern and Claire Rome were on hand to promote the Fall Conference and give out door prizes.

Several MAFP members were elected to MSMA council positions at the meeting, including Drs. Eric Hale, Carlos Latorre, and Tobe Momah as new members. Drs. Erin Dewitt, Jennifer Gholson and Stanley Hartness were re-elected to their council positions.  Three MAFP resident members were re-elected, including Drs. Brock Banks, David Green and Chelsea Rick. Four MAFP student members were elected, including Kandice Bailey, William Buck, Avani Patel, and William Ross.

Proposed New Physician Fee Schedule for Medicare nears
Sept. 10  Deadline for Comment
As the Sept. 10 deadline for commenting on the proposed new CMS physician fee schedule nears, AAFP issued a detailed statement from President Michael Munger, MD, that addresses members' concerns.

"Your AAFP leadership and professional staff have been actively engaged in analyzing the rule, evaluating its impact and preparing the AAFP's response," Dr. Munger said. "We've also shared our initial views with key congressional committees and are prepared to initiate a full lobbying campaign should it become appropriate and necessary."

Dr. Doug Henley, AAFP executive vice president, agreed as he called the CMS proposal "technically flawed." He added that "in the end, this proposal will not likely reduce documentation burden when it only applies to Medicare."

MAFP will continue to keep members informed on this issue.

Physicians Represent YOU at Southeast Family Medicine Forum
Drs. David Wheat and James Griffin, plus Beth Embry, MAFP executive director, represented Mississippi at the annual Southeastern Family Medicine Forum, held August 16-18 in Amelia Island, Florida and hosted by Florida AFP.

"Florida Academy did a great job of hosting the event," Dr. Wheat said. "It was good to renew old friendships with executives and leaders from other states."

Drs. Wheat and Griffin currently serve as MAFP president and vice president this year. Both attended meetings and CME sessions at the conference. Legislative issues were discussed and roundtables were held to discuss items of particular interest to Southeastern states.

100 New Medical Students
Become a Part of MAFP
Current student members did the talking at the Family Medicine luncheon for UMMC M1 students on August 9, and 100 students joined the Academy as a result.

MAFP and the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) partnered to provide lunch for each of the 165 new first-year medical students, during which MAFP staffer Kay-Lynn Meador and medical student members discussed the role of the MAFP, and the specific benefits of membership for students. The presentation, plus testimonials by student members, helped  encourage 100 new members to join that day.

Family medicine appreciated the spotlight during the orientation luncheon for new students.  Dr. Sheree Melton of UMMC Family Medicine department was present. Both FMIG president Will Casey and Miss. Rural Physicians Scholars Program director Dr. Wahnee Sherman also gave presentations to students during the luncheon. Many thanks to Beth Wilson of the UMMC Family Medicine Department who coordinated the luncheon.
