Nov. Dinner
Special Guest Speaker

Dennis "Denny" Johansen
Combat Photographer

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019
No Host Bar starts at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

Our speaker this month is Dennis Johansen who served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam as a Combat Photographer. Dennis will show a selected number of his photos taken while stationed at Cu Chi, Republic of Vietnam from February 1968 to February 1969.

Dennis arrived during the Tet Offensive of 1968 and endured daily attacks and shelling at the support base where he was stationed. He was attached to the Public Information Office (PIO) which was a new innovation for the U.S. Army in an attempt to control information fed to the Press and Wire Services. He was offered the job of Combat Photographer who would then spend up to two weeks with selected combat units in field before returning to base camp where film was processed, photos printed and articles written. The PIO office at the 25th Infantry Division would then feed stories and photos to Stars and Stripes, the wire services such as Reuters, United Press International, and Associated Press. The Division also printed its own tabloid-sized newspaper once per week and a quarterly news magazine which also showcased photos and stories produced by the 17 photographer-writers in the field.

While in Vietnam, Dennis received a Bronze Star with cluster, the Air Medal with two clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with cluster along with the normal in-country awards and citations. Dennis and his wife Jane moved to San Luis Obispo after the termination of his military service in 1970. They opened Jim's Campus Camera in San Luis Obispo which they operated for the next 43 years. Dennis and Jane are both retired and Dennis spends three days-per-week in the Restoration Shop at Estrella Warbird Museum painting airplanes and other museum pieces.

Heads' Up Notices From The Museum

Estrella Warbirds Museum reference library has filled up! We ran out of room until we build more facilities!  Please note: we are unable to current accept any more reference books until further notice.  Plans are underway for our next expansion projects.

Speaking of expansion projects... The museum was so generously granted a special financial donation from EWM board member Ron Brooks, to provide the majority of funding for an expansion to Freedom Hall.  This will accommodate extended storage space for the numerous historical artifacts donated to the museum.  Ron, we appreciate all that you do for the museum!

Veterans Day, Monday, November 11th. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission free for all veterans!

Did you know that New Years is on the first Wednesday in January? We're using our 2020 vision to move the monthly dinner to the 8th of January to avoid any conflicts.

Estrella Warbirds Museum has a terrific crew of volunteers that step up when there is a need.  They are always appreciated very much!

Covered storage areas are always at a premium in the desert sun!  This past week, Mike Kelley, Scott Stelzle, Ron Brooks and others set the foundation and base framing for a covered display area just east of Atkinson Hangar. This space will bring shade cover to some of the aircraft engines which have been on display in various locations throughout the museum.  In addition to the engine display area, you will find much progress has been made towards completing the enclosure for the new motor pool area.  Thanks to all who took part in these endeavors!

Expansion for the museum can only happen  when all funding is raised before we turn a shovel.  We are proud of our community, our members and generous benefactors whom have all had a part in our growth over the past quarter century!  Your support is greatly appreciated by all!  Please keep your museum in mind when you consider your year end giving!
Taylor J-2 Cub Reaches New Heights!

One of the oldest Taylor J-2 Cub's on the FAA registry now resides suspended in flight at the Obbie Atkinson Hangar (Hangar One). This aircraft was recently donated to Estrella Warbirds Museum by Stephen Dwelle.  Thank you!

What gives this aircraft historical importance is the fact that the J-2 Cub is the predecessor to the Piper Aviation line of Cub. Piper himself was involved with Taylor Aircraft until he bought the rights to continue and expand production of the soon to be called "Piper Cub". The Cub played a critical role prior to WWII as it was used for pilot training and as a "Liaison" aircraft used for spotting and inexpensive quick transportation. Read more information about this aircraft at this link or click on the picture below to see more pictures of it being mounted.
