Note From Oscar:

Greetings! Summer sneaked up on us with warm weather and the return of our beautiful Delta breeze. I hope you are all enjoying the beauty and peacefulness of being outdoors. A huge congratulations to all 2020 graduates - high school, middle school and kindergarten - in West Sacramento and Clarksburg. Because of the repercussions of the COVID-19 virus, ceremonies and parties were creatively initiated this year. Virtual graduations were the norm and drive-by parties were all the rage. We succeeded in turning the extraordinary into the ordinary. If you have any questions or want more details on any items in this newsletter, please email me at [email protected], my Deputy, Marianne Estes, [email protected], and/or my Assistant Deputy, Carol Strunk, [email protected] ,

COVID-19 Update

The COVID-19 virus hit hard and fast and life as we knew it changed overnight. At this point we are not out of the woods. We have however, been able to flatten the curve which was the intention of Yolo County and our Yolo County Health Officer. As more sections of the economy open, we urge you to be very careful and take all precautions necessary to keep yourself, your family, your co-workers, and your friends safe. Free testing is available at Club West in West Sacramento until June 27, 2020. Please  click here for more information.

Yolo County has a special page on their website, updated daily, for any and all information you need on COVID-19. Please  click here and check it out.

We had a lot of good come out of our trying times with this virus and here are just a few examples:

The homeless in West Sacramento were housed in a safe place. More than 85 people were sheltered in secure accommodations with supportive services. Most of these individuals were over the age of 65 and/or medically at risk. In addition to being housed, they were fed by generous citizens daily.

The Yolo Food Bank was inundated with requests for food as a result of the layoffs due to the virus. According to their website, "The Covid-19 crisis has increased demand for food assistance in Yolo County by more than 60%." Food was delivered to the homes of seniors and other vulnerable residents by a plethora of volunteers who stepped up to help those less fortunate. The food bank also provided daily meals to more than 280 homeless that were sheltered in motels.

Food pick ups were staffed by volunteers on Saturdays at West Sacramento City Hall, Fridays at the Family Resource Center located at Alyce Norman Elementary School in West Sacramento, and on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at Clarksburg Community Church.

Local Restaurateur Chris Jarosz, owner of Broderick Roadhouse, came up with an innovative way to help feed our vulnerable population.  The Washington Unified School District agreed to make its teaching kitchen at the Bryte Learning Center available, and Broderick's was able to produce at least 1,000 meals per day/12,000 per week. Innovation, generosity, and hands-on volunteering made trying times easier - most especially for our older and vulnerable population in Yolo County. Our community came together in the spirit of giving and set a precedence for helping their neighbors.
