Research

ECHO trial results released
The Evidence for Contraceptive Options and HIV Outcomes (ECHO) study results were released and published in Lancet, addressing a long-standing question about the relationship between hormonal contraceptive use and the risk of HIV acquisition. The study found no substantial difference in HIV risk among women using these three methods of contraception: copper-releasing IUD, a hormonal implant or DMPA-IM injections, also known as Depo-Provera. However, HIV infection rates among the study population of women in east and southern Africa were almost 4%, a wake-up call to the continued risk for women and need for integrated HIV and sexual and reproductive health services.

CUGH call for abstracts and panel proposals
CUGH2020 is now accepting abstracts and panel proposals until August 25. This is an opportunity to showcase the valuable contributions of nursing programs, faculty and nursing students to the global response to HIV, reduction of health disparities and universal healthcare.  More information and to submit an abstract or proposal.

U=U webinar
In 2017, ANAC endorsed the U=U campaign, a concept based in strong scientific evidence that individuals with HIV who receive antiretroviral therapy and have achieved and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit the virus to others.This concept has broad implications for treatment of HIV from a scientific and public health standpoint, for the self-esteem of individuals by reducing the stigma associated with HIV and for certain legal aspects of HIV criminalization.

The Well Project is presenting a webinar   "U=U in 2019: How Far We've Come and Where We're Going" July 9,  from noon - 1:30 p.m. ET. ANAC member Lisa Scotti, CRNP, MPH,RN, will present on provider roles and messaging in U=U. Register here.
