HELP WITH THE NEWEST ‘THREADS OF LOVE AND COMFORT’ (TLC) PROJECT
Support Children Affected by Sexual Assault

Help put the final (handmade) touch on our latest TLC project! We will be creating handmade cards to supplement the kits we’re delivering to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital for sexual assault victims. Sexual assault victims come to the emergency room for medical care
and find that all of their clothing is taken by specially trained
nurses for evidence. The TLC project provides bags filled with
brand new clothing including underwear, socks, shirts, pants,
flip-flops and toiletries for victims, helping to restore some
measure of dignity when they leave the hospital.

Date:  Wednesday, May 29
Time:  10:00 am - 11:30 am
Place:  Two Café, 8573 E. Washington St., Chagrin Falls
Contact:   Cindy Glazer, cindyuglazer@gmail.com or Laura Kuntz, laurajkuntz@gmail.com

Come have coffee and pastry as we make cards to attach to the handmade fleece blankets we are including in our project.

TOUR THE SCHOOL THAT SUPPORTS IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

Bet you didn’t know that Cleveland is the number one city in the country where immigrants become U. S. citizens
(P.D. article 2/7/19).

Bet you also didn’t know that the Cleveland Metropolitan School District operates a special school -- the Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy -- where more than 900 students new to America, are learning while acclimating to life in Greater Cleveland. The students speak 28 languages and can attend for up to two years, far longer than other U.S. schools.

Come tour the school with NCJW/Cleveland.

Date:  Thursday, May 9
Time: 11:00 am
Place:  Newcomers Academy , 3145 W. 46th Street, Cleveland
Meet in the school lobby.

LOVE CHILDREN? LOVE BOOKS?
Volunteers Wanted for Fifth Grade Book Club for 2019-2020 School Year

Book Club pairs three adult volunteers with 6 to 8 fifth graders in a monthly meeting during the lunch hour. We provide the books and pizza. The students provide the impetus for discussion, their unique insights (and cuteness)!

Training provided over the summer for this monthly commitment. (Missing a session or two due to travel is OK.)
Contact: Co-Chairs Lauren Blumenthal, lauren@wogi123.com or Lynn Jacobs, linniebob@gmail.com to express interest.
DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN’S BOOKS YOU CAN DONATE TO BUILDING BRIDGES WITH BOOKS?

We are guessing that many of you have wonderful books gathering dust on shelves. Please consider donating them! Donated books are placed in Cleveland area school libraries. In April, we donated over 300 books to Oliver H. Perry School, a Cleveland
Metropolitan School (CMSD) K-8 school in Collinwood.

GET YOUR HAPPINESS FIX AT THE JEWISH DAY NURSERY/EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (JDN)

If you love pre-school children, then volunteering at JDN is for you!

Volunteers meet with a classroom teacher and agree on a day and time. Since JDN is open year-round, volunteers aren’t restricted to a traditional school year calendar.

Teachers appreciate the time that you give, and the preschoolers benefit from the additional adult interaction and attention. For additional information, please contact Cindy Brodsky, cmbrodsky@gmail.com.

NCJW/CLEVELAND’S WOMEN’S SEDERS
Honoring the Women Who Came Before Us and Connecting with Modern Issues

Since the 1990's, NCJW/Cleveland has been hosting a Women's Seder. Each year, Seder focuses on a different, relevant theme and NCJW edits the Haggadah accordingly. Attendees learn about new rituals, such as Miriam’s Cup and placing an orange (representing LGBTQ inclusion) or a tomato (a symbol of labor trafficking) on the Seder Plate. A butterfly placed on the table is a symbol of immigration rights.

Themes have included Immigration rights and Human Trafficking, among others.

I have attended about six of the Seders and what stands out to me is how creative each one was. Over the years I have incorporated a number of thoughts/pieces from the NCJW Seders into our family’s Seders.” Toni Scherzer

“Through our themes we have really tried to inspire change and honor amazing women. One of my favorite themes was Passover Traditions. Susan Levine was one of many who shared her fabulous family tradition!”   Michele Kaminsky
" T he main feeling I carry with me is that there was always a special, relevant twist to bring home the importance of our tradition’s history into our current and everyday lives. "
Susan C. Levine
