Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management (MCEM) compiles this monthly email to provide information related to emergency management activities across Multnomah County and beyond.
National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month (NPM), recognized each September, provides an opportunity to remind us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. This NPM will focus on planning, with an overarching theme: Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.

  • Week 1: Sept 1-8: Make and Practice Your Plan

  • Week 2: Sept 9-15*: Learn Life Saving Skills
*September 15 is a National Day of Action

  • Week 3: Sept 16-22: Check Your Insurance Coverage

  • Week 4: Sept 23-29: Save For an Emergency

RDPO Updated Work Plan

The RDPO's updated “high level” work plan encompasses all UASI and RDPO grant-funded projects and other major activities and initiatives that align with the 2017-2021 RDPO Strategic Plan. Funding for this period includes nearly $10.5 million in UASI grants and RDPO project funds (local partner contributions).

FEMA Podcast

The FEMA Podcast is a new audio program series available to anyone interested in learning more about the Agency, hearing about innovation in the field of emergency management, and listening to stories about communities and individuals recovering after disasters. Emergency management professionals and the general public are encouraged to listen in and to follow the podcast on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram where you can join the conversation every time a new episode is posted. Nationwide IPAWS Test

There will be a nationwide test of the Integrated public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) on Thursday, Sept. 20 . IPAWS encompasses the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA). The test, coordinated by FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be broadcast via radio, TV, cable stations and wireless carriers. The EAS portion of the test will occur at 11:18 a.m . Pacific Time (2:18 p.m. EDT); the WEA portion will occur at 11:20 a.m . Pacific Time (2:20 p.m. EDT).

Sheriff's Office Employee Wellness Initiative
Sheriff Reese has announced the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Employee Wellness Initiative. Intended to be an ongoing effort, this program will look for ways to help staff take care of themselves physically and emotionally, and maintain a healthy outlook and attitude in spite of the challenges faced in public safety service. Troutdale Partner Travels Across the Country to Improve Town's Preparedness

A jolt of excitement ran through me as I disembarked my plane at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. I had arrived for my first FEMA Emergency Management Institute (EMI) Course at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC). It had been a long journey from Troutdale, OR for a weeklong course focused on FEMA’s Cooperating Technical Partnership (CTP) program, a program that allows communities and other agencies to partner with FEMA in flood hazard mapping and all-hazards risk reduction campaigns. Troutdale recently joined the CTP ranks, and is one of only a very small number of communities in Oregon to have received this distinction.... Continue reading

Training Opportunities

  • September 10, 8:30am-3:45pm, Rose Quarter, Portland.  DHS Active Shooter Preparedness Workshop. This is not a tactical training course – this course is designed to enhance awareness of, and response to, an active shooter event. Participants will also learn how to incorporate key elements of successful incident management into planning efforts.  Register here, FREE!

  • September 20, 8am-12:30pm, Portland, OR: Emergency/Disaster Deployment Basics. This course will prepare individuals who are interested in performing volunteer operations for the county during local emergencies or disasters for being deployed by the Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management. Students will build an understanding of emergency management operations, the Incident Command System (ICS), disaster environments, expectations of disaster service workers, and their safety and well-being during deployment.   • October 30 - November 1, 8am-5pm, Salem, OR.  L0141 Instructional Presentation and Evaluation Skills. This three day course addresses the practicalities of conducting successful interactions, managing the classroom experience, and making presentations. It covers the basics of adult learning and of training evaluation for those wanting more experience in this area.
