WORD for the Week for June 30, 2019
Third Sunday After Pentecost
A 9-week worship series: The Gift of Wonder
Week 1
The Gift of Wonder: Three Miracles Before Breakfast

This summer, get to know God in a new way. Experience The Gift of Wonder in our 9-week summer worship series beginning June 30.

Can you imagine a God who dances with shouts of joy, laughs when you laugh, loves to play, enjoys life, and invites us to join in the fun? In this series we will explore what it means to delight in God, to set our imaginations free, to return to the rhythm of life, to cultivate gratitude, and more.

Using the book The Gift of Wonder by Christine Aroney-Sine as our guide, every week we will try a new practice for opening ourselves to awe and wonder–to God. Spend the season deepening your wonder in God at Hennepin.

Reflection: Curiosity…Awe…Playfulness…Imagination…Trust…Joy… welcome to summer worship in Sacred Journey! Our new series,  The Gift of Wonder  invites us all to revisit the joy of faith as we explore new possibilities and practices to find delight in God and in shared community. This week, Frenchye guides The Story as we reflect on the times when we’ve experienced miracles, recalling the joy and awe they bring to our lives. This is a series that offers moments of contemplation, holy play, hands-on creativity, and, hopefully, weeks of wonder in the beauty around us, the God who loved us, and the miracles of love and faith happening within us. Bring a friend or neighbor to share the journey with you. All are welcome!

NEW SERIES: The Gift of Wonder: Creative Practices for Delighting in God
This summer series is about wonder. It is loosely based on our small group book, The Gift of Wonder by Christine Aroney-Sine.

Reflection questions: Aroney-Sine asks, "Have we dismissed the child within us and lost the joy of life and the delight in God that emerges when we play and laugh and marvel at the world around us? Ask kids what they don't like about adults and they say we don't have enough fun. We don't enjoy life enough and we don't enjoy God enough either. To enjoy God more fully and recognize God's delight in us, we must rediscover the world of childhood and unleash the inner child hidden deep in our souls."

That's just what we are going to do at Hennepin this summer! What would it feel like to really recognize God's delight in us and unleash the inner child hidden in our souls? We will find out.

What do you enjoy doing? What has made you laugh or smile today? In what ways does joyful moments make you sense God's pleasure and draw you closer to God and others?

What keeps you from being joyful? Read Psalm 16:5-11. What does it say about celebrating and joy?

Ponder this poem by Aroney-Sine

How delightful it is
to live in a place of beauty,
to share the joy of life
with the great I AM.
How delightful it is
to see the birds hovering overhead,
and hear the whispering wind
rustling through the trees.
I breathe in the rhythm of God's world,
the ebb and flow of seasons,
the fading of day's bright light
into night's embrace.
I dance for joy
surrounded by God's grandeur
and open my senses to wonder and awe.
I sit content in the glory of God's embrace
and absorb the fragrance of God's loving presence.
