Summer Reading Program Continues

Summer is flying by, but there’s still so much time left to sign up for summer reading. Kids and teens, if you haven’t started the program or misplaced your reading log, stop by the Youth Services Desk to get going. Adults have through August 8 to get all their entries in for the prize drawings on August 9. You can submit entries online through our website:

Keep snapping those pictures for our 4th annual amateur photo contest. We have a Best in Show cash prize of $250 (generously donated by Friends of the Whitefish Bay Library!) This contest is open to amateur photographers of any age!

Wisconsin's Digital Library was established in 2001 and is a shared, statewide collection of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and streaming video available for free to all Wisconsin public library card holders. Currently, Wisconsin's Digital Library is the collection of digital materials powered by OverDrive and BiblioBoard. (https://www.wplc.info/).
Each library and library system in the state contributes money to purchase materials for the WPLC. This enables us to offer more than what we could afford on our own. The 2019 WPLC budget is $1,239,675.
You would be surprised how far that much money does NOT go in purchasing digital materials. We purchase e-materials from the publisher and are beholden to their pricing. As a citizen you can purchase e-books from $10-$30 for one title. The library is charged anywhere from $50-$150 per title, and we are only allowed to check out one digital item to one patron at a time.
We hear and understand the frustration that the long hold lists create and appreciate our patrons’ understanding. We strive to keep up with the transition to digital materials as the budget allows. At WFB Public Library, digital materials account for 10% of our total circulation, while the cost of those materials is 20% of our total collections budget.
Also keep in mind that there are no waiting on titles in
hoopla. Everything you find in this collection is available for download immediately! We've recently seen a jump in use on hoopla and to make sure it is available through the end of the year, title checkouts per month have gone from 6 to 4 titles per card, per month.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing on July 20, 1969, hear astronaut Neil Armstrong recount the lead up to the first moon landing as well as the other “series of firsts” associated with that historic mission including the first color transmission from Earth and the first time a customs report was filled out from another planet!

Can you survive in space? Use robot hands to fix complicated tech, retrieve space junk for scientific study, and more! We’ll also learn about real life astronauts and the exciting work they do.
