Canapés & Conversations
This month's event will be held at the Apple River Fort State Historic site in Elizabeth TONIGHT by Don & Crystal Mason and Deb Pausz - they are asking that you stop first at the Interpretive Center, as the event may be held there. There will be a note if you are to continue on to the Fort itself, where you will be able to park close however, there is uneven terrain inside the Fort. Buildings will be open but seating will be limited so feel free to bring a chair. Assorted bug juice will be available. Please bring a guest, a beverage and a nibble to share. All are welcome! Any questions, please call Don & Crystal 815-291-0071 (Don cell phone).
Watershed Game
The Mission Outreach Committee invites you to join us as we play the Watershed Game. Sunday, June 23rd at noon, after church and our social hour we'll have the opportunity to play a game, win some chocolate, and learn about our watershed and the many stakeholders impacting water use. Participants learn about practices, plans, and policies that improve and protect the quality of a stream, lake or river. As a church we have supported the Jo Daviess Watershed Project financially. The object of this team-building game is to achieve a clean water goal regarding sediment while balancing financial resources.

Oh, no! What on earth could I do? I rushed out of the Chicago place to take my car to the Nissan dealer in Evanston for some maintenance while I was attending a Dean's meeting in Chicago. In my haste, I left the book I was planning to read on the "L" on the kitchen counter. In addition, my phone has been acting up and would not give me power to last the duration of the ride. What was I to do for the hour that I would be in transit?
I stopped at Starbucks for a cup of coffee and small square of cinnamon coffee cake, then walked the short block to the Main Street CTA station--using, for the first time my reduced fare senior pass. It was nearly 9:30 am, so most of the rush hour traffic was gone yet I was able to stay on the Evanston Express until I had to switch to the Red Line at Fullerton Avenue. Easy. Plenty of seats, so I didn't have to juggle the coffee cup.
But, again, no book. I'd already checked my e-mails. What if I just sat quietly and observed what was around me? The landscape outside the train. The people sitting in the car with me.
We spun through the far south part of Evanston, stopped at Howard Street just on the northern border of Chicago where more people from the north and west joined us. Unlike driving on Lake Shore Drive where there are broad expanses of Lake Michigan and park, we saw primarily the back sides of buildings bordering the tracks. Some brick walls almost close enough to touch, some with decks with potted plants and some with drying laundry.
The people seemed to be a diverse mix--not so many looked like they were going into the office at that time of morning, except some in scrubs heading for a shift at Illinois Masonic or Northwestern. But there were lots of students readings heavy texts, families on outings, as well as as laborers. Very few were talking--except on their phones. Yes, the phones seemed to be the uniting feature. Heads bent toward the screens, fingers dancing over the keys, ear buds--some tethered, some wireless, noise canceling earphones, one after another glued to 3x5 rectangles. And I would be no different, except for a failing battery.
We sped past Wrigley Field, without the crowds of last night's game. Switched to the red line where I clung to a strap with one hand and my remaining coffee with the other as we descended into the tunnels and past the stops I recall from my younger days. North and Clybourne, the destination for Old Town (and the place I first heard Jim Post in the day). State and Division for the Rush Street clubs. And then, finally, Chicago Avenue for the short walk to 65 E. Huron for my meeting with the Bishop and Deans.
Another day in the life of a priest. And I didn't miss my book at all!
See you in church,
Gloria+

We have now fully entered the long, green season that extends through the Sundays after Pentecost until Advent 1. Often called "Ordinary Time," it comprises the second half of the liturgical year.
In the season after Pentecost, we celebrate what God does to empower us to live out the Gospel day to day and week to week in the context of our ordinary lives ("Internet Monk").
READINGS:
1 Kings 19:1-4, (5-7), 8-15a: God instructs Elijah to go to Mount Sinai, and comes to him there. At Elijah's cave he experiences wind, earthquake and fire, but God's voice is only heard in the whisper that follows. In spite of his fear at the threats against his life, God leads him back into ministry.
Psalm 42 & 43: A song of lament, with a commitment to praise God in the face of persecution of suffering.
Galatians 3:23-29: Now that the way of faith in Christ has come, the law is no longer needed. Those who trust in Christ are God's children, and we are all equal in God's family.
Luke 8:26-39: Jesus liberates the Gerasene demonaic, who begs to go with Jesus once he has been healed. But Jesus sends him home to tell of what God did for him.
As we seek to resist the work of evil in our churches and communities, it is important that we are careful in what we identify as evil. Jesus correctly recognises the forces at work within the demoniac, but does not label the person as evil. In contrast, Elijah, finds himself in confrontation with people who have given themselves over to evil purposes and actions. As Paul points out, it is tempting to use the law as the basis for deciding what is good or what is bad, and obedience to the law as the basis for deciding who is good and who isn't. But, from the basis of grace, and of Christ's inclusive invitation, good and evil look very different. Anything that would persecute another (as the Psalmists experienced), anything that would oppress another (like the demoniac) or anything that would deny grace to another (as Paul teaches) violates God's grace and love, and brings division and destruction. As we seek to stand for God's justice, it is important that we keep God's grace and love in mind, and that we rightly choose what to oppose and what to embrace.

Movie Night
Come enjoy the hilarity of our next feature: "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", the Coen Brothers' 2000 comedy loosely based on Homer's "Odyssey", staring George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson and other supporting characters. (And we do mean "characters".) Sunday, July 7th in the Parish Hall at 6pm.
We meet regularly at 6 p.m. on 1st Sundays of the month. (So mark your calendars!) Bring your own snack if you wish to (quietly) dine during the movie. (Mustn't interrupt the laughter.) Coffee and hot water (for tea) will be provided.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? |
Inquirers' Classes/Reception by Bishop
In three months, Bishop Lee will visit Grace Galena for the last time before his retirement in August 2020. During his visit, he will be receiving or confirming those who would like to become members of the Episcopal Church. When one has been baptized or confirmed in another
non-Episcopal church,
they may be received in the Episcopal Church.
If an adult has not been baptized--or is not sure if they have been
baptized--that can take place as well.
For any of these circumstances, a short class will be offered by Diane Luther. There will be several ways to complete the six-hour class prior to Bishop Lee's visit.
On Saturday, July 27th, there will be a six-hour class at the Parish House. For those who would prefer to attend two three-hour classes, they will be offered on Saturday, August 10 and Saturday, September 7.
We will talk about a number of things, including what we believe and how we worship, the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist, a brief history of the Anglican and Episcopal church and of Grace here in Galena. We will look at the structure of our church, our diocese and the national church, and we will explore the Book of Common Prayer. We will watch short videos together and hopefully have interesting discussions.
Taking the class does not obligate anyone to be received. You may come if you are wishing to learn more but are not certain if you are ready to make the decision to be received. You may come if you simply want a "refresher." Those who do wish to be received will, however, be given priority
Please email the church office right away if you are interested. If you have questions about being received in the Episcopal Church, please speak with Rev. Hopewell. Or, check the membership brochure on our website at gracegalena.org/forms.

United Churches Food Pantry Needs
If you are not already a Food Pantry volunteer, might you consider it? Some of the long term volunteers are wishing to retire. So, there are opportunities available for the 2nd and 4th Thursday distributions (you may sign up for one or both). The volunteer coordinator is Celeste Mancini at
c_mancini317@sbcglobal.net.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
River Bend Mobile Food Pantry Distribution will be on Saturday, June 29th at Crossroads Community Church. This is an opportunity to volunteer a couple of hours of your time to help the food insecure population in and around our city and county.
Proxy Program
Proxy volunteers are needed for the food pantry program? We have about six people at this time but I am still having trouble finding people for the last minute requests. It would be great to have a few more dedicated people that we can rely upon. Please let me know if you have any questions. The Galena Bible Church administers the program and I just organize volunteers. The food pantry staff will train people. Thank you for the consideration. --Krista Ginger
