Is Your Child Deficient in the Enzyme Phenol-Sulfur-Transferase?

Everyone has been told that we should have 6-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day, but this may very likely be detrimental to a person who has ASD. Most people on the spectrum have deficient activity in the enzyme called phenol-sulfur transferase. This enzyme is needed to breakdown phenols, and to produce sulfate ions, which are needed for detoxification of environmental chemicals, salicylates, phenols, food additives and some medications.

Phenols are in most plant based food, and we need some in our diet, but if they start to build up in the body they can result in negative reactions, such as night waking, night sweats, irritability, eczema and other skin conditions, emotional extreme highs followed by very low mood, head banging and other self injurious behavior, aggression, headache, dark circles under the eyes, red face/ears and diarrhea. Hyperactivity is more common in children’s reactions, whereas adults often experience chronic fatigue. High amounts of phenols (polyphenols) inhibit MAO-A, which in turn negates the Respen-A .

If the sulfation pathway is not functioning well, a person may not be able to process out the phenolic compounds as fast as they consume them. There is a cumulative effect. When the phenols start backing up in the system, it can cause a myriad of negative reactions. The symptoms of phenol intolerance and yeast may be very similar because they both involve the body trying to deal with toxins.

How do you know that you may have a problem with phenols?

Being more sensitive to foods containing salicylates, colorful fruits and vegetables, spices, herbs (even medicinal herbs) can be an indication. This is problematic because it includes many of the healthy foods that we need for fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Parents will often note that rashes or behaviors get worse when their child has consumed anything with a lot of artificial color. This can sometimes be mistaken for sugar-reactions when it is more due to the high phenol content.

Other things that may indicate a problem with processing phenolic compounds include being more sensitive to chemicals, suffering with infections or gut dysbiosis, and getting worse every time you try and treat them.

Typical symptoms of phenol or salicylate sensitivity include:

  • Emotional extremes
  • Inappropriate laughter
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Red face/ears
  • Allergy-type symptoms such as hives, asthma
  • Chronic infections such as ear infections, sinus problems
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to noise, light, touch
  • Trouble falling asleep at night, waking up during the night, insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Night sweats
  • Bed wetting and day wetting
  • Aggression esp. when exposed to petroleum-based phenols
  • Self-injury such as head banging, hitting
  • Hyperactivity in children
  • Learning difficulties such as dyslexia, speech difficulties
  • Chronic fatigue in adults

Note that the symptoms of phenols building up are the same as those symptoms associated with deficient MAO-A activity. High polyphenols inhibit MAO-A.

It is impossible to completely eliminate phenols and salicylates from the diet as they are in most foods we eat. However, three immediate things one can do to minimize the problem are to 1) avoid foods high in phenols, 2) eat only small portions of foods containing phenols, and 3) try to space the 'consumption of phenols' further apart.

In addition, supplement sulfate ions, such as with using a magnesium sulfate cream and applying it several times a day as sulfate ions only last in the body 1-5 hours. If you've ever noticed that your child seems to respond well to Epsom salts baths, but the effect doesn’t last long after the bath, most likely they are deficient in sulfate ions due to deficient activity of the phenol-sulfur transferase enzyme.

The following is from a parent who has had success reducing phenols in her son's diet:

'Elaine brought to my attention the phenols issue. She mentioned that if I see dark circles around my son's eyes, then he is probably low in the enzyme that breaks down phenols. Initially I wasn't sure, so I used the magnesium sulfate cream, and gave my son the No-Fenol enzyme (available on Amazon) when having meals containing high phenol foods, to help break down phenols. Within a few days I saw dramatic improvement in his mood and behaviors, and he had even become more responsive to humor. He has become more compliant and happy again'.

Did you know that Respen-A™ helps eliminate Anxiety?
Feedback From a Parent:

The Respen-A™ significantly reduced my stress level immediately. I didn't realize how much anxiety affected me until it was gone.

I think I have been in a constant state of anxiety for years because of the stressful environment of having an autistic child. It's like my brain wasn't able to relax. I am an introvert, but I was staying home almost always because leaving the house had become so stressful. Now it doesn't bother me at all. It's such a difference - immediately!

I have been very tired - and I've been feeling like I'm dealing with some die-off from toxins or something. I've reduced my sugar intake and I'm not eating before bedtime like I used to - it was like stress hunger.

Also, I have been trying to lose weight for years, but haven't been able to even when I have tracked my foods. I started Weight Watchers about the same time as the Respen-A™, but I think the disc may have helped too.

I've actually lost a couple of pounds - which doesn't seem like a lot but it's a great start for me. I have gained a lot of weight in my torso over the last several years. I suspect my weight issues have to do with all of the stress as well. Anyway - that's an added bonus for me!

More Feedback From a Parent Regarding June Article on Curing Lyme, etc.:

Our August Newsletter featured a testimony from a parent who'd read the June Newsletter article about curing Lyme Disease, etc.( with complex homeopathy that doesn't negate Respen-A ™) , who'd followed through with the recommendation to see Dr. Nader Soliman of Rockville, MD in search of results for her son who had been using Respen-A™ since June of 2018. For those of you following her story, here is more feedback:

10/22/2019

We have seen Dr. Soliman twice and will be returning for a third visit in early November. Unequivocally, I can say that seeing him was the best decision that we have made concerning our son’s recovery from autism. That is a big statement considering all of the doctors and therapies we have tried over the last 12 years.

I would never want to mislead someone into thinking that this journey with Dr. Soliman has been straightforward progress. On the contrary, it has been a roller coaster. However, it is a ride that is necessary and will lead us to complete healing. That being said, the highs on this roller coaster have been better than anything we have ever experienced.

We have seen improvement in every single area of our son’s life. His sentence structure has become more complex, and speech has always been an area of difficulty. He did not really begin talking until he was 7, and it was only one or two words at a time for several years. Any time we would begin treating him for any one of the myriad of infections he harbors, he would always regress back to two words maximum. This time, his ability to communicate has not diminished- leading to a lot less frustration on his part. Schoolwork is much easier as he is able to focus more. He is a lot less fatigued and regularly wants to engage in physical activity. He is more social, initiating games and conversation with others, and he has the ability to stay focused long enough to finish a game. His 17 yr old sister commented to me on how much progress he was making. She rarely comments on anything, reminding me how significant his growth is.

All of these things have occurred in a very short period of time. His first visit was in the middle of July. I can only imagine how far he will go in the one year time frame Dr. Soliman estimated!

For those rough patches due to healing crises, we have found that large doses of magnesium coupled with ibuprofen provide the best outcome. These crises will become fewer and farther between as the pathogenic load he is carrying lessens.

For anyone who is still unsure about seeing Dr. Soliman, I felt the same way. My only regret now is that we did not make an appointment sooner!

HAVE YOU HEARD?

It is normal for some children, about 1 in 40, to see increased giddiness and hyperactivity within the first three days use of the Respen-A™ Disc as the body clears excess serotonin that it previously couldn't utilize.

IF the hyperactivity continues following three full (12 hour) days of wearing the disc, decrease the dose to 1/2 disc and the hyperactivity should resolve. These are the few children whose serotonin is being turned over too quickly into the active aldehyde by the Respen-A™ Disc.

Please call or email us first, to troubleshoot, before making this change!

Alex, 7th Grade School Photo
Dear Elaine,

I went to Alex's autism reassessment meeting at the end of May, 2019. He no longer needed physical therapy services as of about 6-9 months prior.

In April, the team proposed that he no longer needed Occupational Therapy, but they are extending the services for a year because Alex will most likely be moving into a new program, and they want to make sure he has all of the services he needs.

The new program focuses on more social, group and practical skills. Alex will also continue his academic work. He is currently in a classroom with one on one support, but his current teacher feels like he is ready for more independence.

At the last meeting, the head of the program said, "Alex could get a job someday...", which was a little surprising to me because I have accepted that he may never be that independent, but I'm allowing myself hope again!

Alex's teacher, support staff and school program are all definitely helping him advance, but I know that Respen-A™ is allowing him to access his abilities and grow to his potential.

Finding out about him moving schools took me a little off guard, but we are very excited! I've included Alex's 7th grade school photo. This year he’s smiling and looking at the camera, which he has done once before but the teacher had to work really hard for that picture (and they probably took several pictures). This year – he is smiling naturally when asked to smile – not much extra work.

Dear Kerri,

I've wanted to write you for some time to share how things are going, but I have been so busy. Tybalt was doing well, but I had the feeling that he did better if I gave the 5htp every 3 hours.

I've wanted to ask if this was okay*, but as I mentioned, I’ve been extremely busy- not just with Tybalt, but also with my work. As a result, I've been sleeping poorly, and this morning I was so exhausted.

Working with Tybalt this morning, I thought it strange because he seemed to have trouble concentrating on the reading, but I figured maybe it was my slow energy influencing him.

Afterwards, I went shopping, and once I returned home I found that Tybalt was extremely agitated; screaming, and talking about wanting to go to the dark side. I hadn’t seen this for ages. I asked the helper if he had given the 5htp, and he said no. That’s it, I figured, and gave Tybalt the 5htp, but then I remembered your story of when your son was the same way and had locked himself in the car.

It suddenly dawned on me- in my tired mood- that I had forgotten to give Tybalt the Respen earlier that morning! I gave it to him, and 1 hour later, he was his old, sweet self...or should I call it the new Respen self? (smiley face emoji)

*Answer: 5-HTP lasts for 4 hours in the body, so try to dose 4 - 5 times per day!

Question of the Month...From US to You!

Do you know that there are no side effects with Respen-A™, only benefit? For some children, there may be issues in relation to hyperactivity, calcium absorption, and skin sensitivity. These are addressed in the Frequently Asked Questions section of our website:

Do you know that it is recommended that you wait 45 - 60 minutes following calcium before putting the Respen-A™ disc on? Most parents report better results if you wait 45 minutes following calcium skin cream, or 1 hour following oral calcium, before applying the disc.
