Lead with Confidence: It's All About Showing Up at LCUL's 2019 Convention
Why are you showing up? Are we just in attendance or are we truly present and fully engaged? You don't have to be the boss to be a leader - you don't even have to manage anyone. Bosses climb the ladder of a company, while leaders spend the time working on themselves. They become the person their team needs. They show up for themselves so they can show up for others.

In the opening keynote at our upcoming Annual Meeting & Convention, Melanie Springs speaks to those who are ready to step up their game.

Melanie Spring is a brand storyteller and international keynote speaker with a drive to make sure you become unforgettable. She'll make you want to be her best friend, yet when she gets to know enough of your story, she'll find the perfect way to push you outside of your box. Her personal brand is 'Approachable Badass' and when you meet her, you'll know why. She got out of her own box when she went on a 7,000-mile road trip collecting stories on how companies lived their brand. The Live Your Brand Tour was published in Entrepreneur Magazine, where she earned her title as a veteran brand strategist.

Melanie will also be on hand for two dynamic breakout sessions:
  • Speak and Present with Confidence: No matter your role, on occasion we all have to speak publicly or make a presentation. It could be to your membership, your board, vendors or to your boss. You want to improve your presentations, hone your speaking skills or ask for what you want with courage? This session gives you a map for creating what you want to share AND gives you the confidence to share it.
  • Rock your Credit Union Brand: Create Brand Ambassadorship: Do you remember the last time you heard a truly great story? You may not remember all the details but you remember how it made you feel. That's what great brands do. Get ready to build brand ambassadorship inside and out with any budget. We'll share how to get your whole team on board and get people talking about you. Examples and tips will have you heading back to the office with a plan!

How Facebook's Libra Announcement Could Permanently Disrupt the CU Industry
Facebook unveiled its plans to launch a new blockchain-based payments network called "Libra." The announcement came after a lot of speculation over whether Facebook would be making an entry into the global cryptocurrency markets and how that might impact Facebook's 2 billion global users.

In case you missed the announcement, here are a few quick takeaways from the Libra announcement:
  • While Facebook is the primary creator of the network, over 28 companies were involved in co-founding the "Calibra initiative" include Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Andreesen Horowitz and Uber.
  • Libra will act as a global currency, leveraging blockchain technology in order to serve unbanked consumers around the world.
  • Libra has its own coding language, which Facebook is touting as efficient and secure.
  • Facebook's engineers are designing Libra's interface to be friction-free - and presumably familiar to Facebook's billions of users.
Given that payments is now a  $110 trillion industry, it is not surprising to see a large social media platform like Facebook try to jump into the space. What this new payments network will actually mean for the future of payments - and financial services as a whole - remains to be seen.

SRCUS Management School Students 'Give Back' in True CU Spirit
During this year's Southeast CUNA Management School, students took a break from the academic rigors of the program to put credit unions' "people helping people" philosophy into action.

Thirty-four credit union professionals worked together to provide school supplies for students in need in the Athens, GA area. Members of the Class of 2019 purchased school supplies and then spent the afternoon decorating and assembling 125 supply bags, which were brought to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Athens. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens has provided a clean, healthy, and safe environment for youth of Clark County for over 50 years, where 71% of students in the Clarke County School System come from an economically disadvantaged background.

In addition to supply bags, the class provided 125 BRAVE bears, which will be given to a foster care agency and distributed to children who are placed in foster care.

The Southeast CUNA Management School is administered by the Southeast Regional Credit Union Schools (SRCUS). Students in the Class of 2019 serve credit unions from eleven states across the United States, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Pelican State CU Grants $15,000 in College Scholarship Awards
Pelican State CU granted $15,000 in college scholarships to graduating Pelican members based on their academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership, and community service.

Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 were awarded to one member from each of Pelican's 11 branch parishes as well as one out of state member . Plus, for the first time this year, the credit union offered two new $1,000 awards designed to benefit students who have excelled in specific areas outside of their scholastic record.

The Heart for Service Award was created to honor a student who exhibited outstanding service and dedication to their community, and the Pelican Perseverance Award was created to help a student who displayed strength and commitment to overcome adversity and challenges in their life. Both awards were given to one highly deserving student, bringing the total number of scholarship winners to 14.

These students were selected by a volunteer committee made up of Pelican employees, which scored a total of 80 scholarship applications from students with over 1,000 combined hours of volunteer service. Award recipients can use their scholarship to cover tuition, textbooks, meal plans, and much more.

"We are committed to providing free financial education and serving Louisiana with an open heart. Our scholarship program has built upon this mission and helped prepare high school seniors to tackle college expenses," explained Pelican CEO Jeffrey K. Conrad.
