Developmental Disorders: Discovery of New Mutations
[Source: Science Daily]

Developmental disorders are neurologically-based conditions that affect the acquisition of specific skills such as attention, memory, language and social interaction. Although they have a genetic cause, this is often difficult to detect through standard genetic analysis of the parents. The mutation found in the affected child is therefore termed a 'de novo' mutation (DNM).

Mood Disorders Linked to Teen Sleep Loss
[Source:  Psych Central]

Sleep loss and chronic sleep deprivation is a problem for many kids and teens. Staying up late and waking up early for work or school has become a way of life, especially with the increasing use of phones and tablets late into the night.

Researchers worry, however, that this social jet lag may result in serious health and mental health risks. A new study suggests that for teenagers, even a short period of sleep restriction could, over the long term, raise their risk for depression and addiction.

Altered Brain Activity in Antisocial Teenagers

Teenage girls with problematic social behavior display reduced brain activity and weaker connectivity between the brain regions implicated in emotion regulation. Most Classroom Teachers Feel Unprepared to Support Students With Disabilities
[Source: Education Week]

Less than 1 in 5 general education teachers feel "very well prepared" to teach students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, including ADHD and dyslexia, according to a new survey from two national advocacy groups.

The survey found that only 30 percent of general education teachers feel "strongly" that they can successfully teach students with learning disabilities-and only 50 percent believe those students can reach grade-level standards.

This worksheets and activities packet is perfect for a variety of preschool and early elementary ages. There are a couple of mazes that would work for much older kids as well. (Or maybe mazes just intimidate me.)

DS Corner: Visual Supports for Children with Down Syndrome
By: Marinet vanVuren

We all benefit from visual supports. We have diaries and calendars; we watch the clock, write shopping lists and keep invitations. All children with Down Syndrome can benefit from visual supports. Visual supports are information that we can see through pictures, objects, gestures and written language. Children with Down Syndrome are strong visual learners. Pediatric Tx Corner:  Reflections on Alaska...Where Life is Bigger
Editor's Note:  Susan Mullins, OTR/L is a returning contractor for PediaStaff.  A few years ago, she accepted the opportunity of a lifetime to work in Fairbanks, Alaska.  Before she left for her adventure, we asked Susan if she would write an article for us about her early experiences there that we could share here on our blog and newsletter.   Little did she know how profoundly this trip would affect her - and so quickly!

When I first read Susan's essay, I thought it read like an ad for PediaStaff!  I seriously contemplated asking her to rewrite it so our readers wouldn't think we wrote it under her name.  But then I thought,  "No.  This essay is from the heart and I shouldn't touch it!"   So, here it is, unedited!   Thank you Susan for such a beautiful account of your impressions so far!
