I’d like to take a minute to acknowledge the staff members who keep the VMTH at peak performance. So often in the correspondence I have with clients, they mention the staff members who play such a large part in their animal’s care. They’ll tell me of a technician who went out of her way to spend extra time with their dog who was scared to be in the wards overnight, or to provide them with a special toy or some other “touch of home” that the owners brought. One of our Key Pillars is “Value People,” and the belief that acknowledging our people’s efforts and recognizing their individual strengths empowers our success. I want you, our valued staff members, to know that your voice is important, and your dedication to our ultimate goal of superior patient care can significantly change how our clients view us. I want to encourage all of you to strive for a goal of playing the most important role in every patient’s visit, because sometimes what seems like the smallest item can be the thing that stands out the most to a client. Thank you and keep up the great work! I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season that is filled with health and happiness.

Taking a patient from the 2nd floor of the VMTH to the CT scanner in VM2 sounds like an easy enough task, but it’s actually quite labor intensive when you factor in the vastness of the hospital. And many technicians perform this task more than 200 times per year. After being attacked by a dog,
Kevin the cat needed a CT scan to determine the extent of his injuries and help plan his successful surgery. Monica Calder and Megan Loscar, registered veterinary technicians with the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service (DOSS), cared for him every step of the way in his long journeys through the hospital. DOSS performed a complex surgery to repair his fractured mandible, using a titanium plate and screws to stabilize his jaw. They also extracted a fractured tooth, closed open wounds in Kevin’s mouth, and placed a wire around the intermandibular joint. Kevin recovered well from his injuries and is happy and healthy again. His successful outcome is a direct result of Monica’s and Megan’s dedication to his care. The hospital places great value in dedicated staff members like Monica and Megan, and acknowledges that efforts like theirs greatly contribute to our success.

VMC Phase I
- Construction on both the Laundry Relocation Project and the new Feline Treatment and Housing Suite (Ward 3 Redesign) continues. We anticipate the new feline room to be complete early in the new year and look forward to the increased efficiency it will provide our technicians as they care for hospitalized cats.
- Hospital administrators, staff, and faculty continue to work with architects on the final design plans for the All Species Imaging Center, to be built adjacent to the south side of the VMTH. Construction on this central hub of imaging services is scheduled to commence in 2020.
