June 2019
Our Newest Alumni: Congrats to the Class of 2019!
Thanks to creative Shaker volunteers, we now enjoy a new tradition: at the end of May, before commencement, graduating seniors return to their elementary schools to have one last "clap out" and to inspire current elementary students. Enjoy the  video from this year.

Classes of 50/51 Gives Back
Members of Classes of 50/51 with Lomond Elementary students

We are so grateful for our Shaker alumni. The high school classes of 1950/51, working with the Shaker Schools Foundation, generously donated funding for a social-emotional learning curriculum that was piloted this year at Lomond Elementary School with great success. "Caring School Community" builds classroom and school-wide community while developing social and emotional learning skills and competencies for students in grades K-8.

You can make a difference in the lives our students, too - when you make a gift to the Annual Fund at  shakerschoolsfoundation.org.  To help us reach our goal, make your donation by midnight on June 30!

My Shaker Story: Michael Tate, Class of 1985

We look forward to welcoming Michael Tate, Class of '85 back to Shaker next spring, when he will put his auctioneering talents to good use as an emcee for
A Night for the Red & White. Mark your calendars for
Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown!

Where are you now and what are you doing?
For more than two decades, I have lived in San Francisco. It was a huge change from my life in Providence, RI where I was working at the Brown University Alumni Office. While it was difficult to leave my alma mater, I landed at the Stanford Alumni Association where I have worked for 21 years and manage our five-member digital production team. However, to quote Marie Kondo, what really "sparks joy" for me is my 18 years (and counting) singing in the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. It is through this organization that I discovered my love for public speaking and auctioneering. This has provided an opportunity for me to meet so many wonderful people and to learn about and partner with an array of awesome nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area and beyond. This work really makes my heart sing!

Tell us a little bit about your Shaker experience.
I attended Lomond through 4th grade and then Ludlow for 5th and 6th grade, where I was a member of the inaugural class of the "Special Projects" program that launched in the Fall of 1977. This experience truly changed my life. I had the opportunity to meet 22 other quirky, highly-motivated kids from all 9 elementary schools. We shared so many unique experience together and have remained close friends. In fact, we have already had 2 reunions. From there, I attended Byron and then, of course, on to Shaker Heights High School. Among my favorite teachers were Ms. Booker (2nd grade), Ms. Hrvatin (4th grade), Ms. McDowell (5th grade), Mr. Longo (Global Studies), Madame Watterson and Monsieur Warnement (French), Ms. Lehman (Music), Mr. Alt (Math), and Mr. Hanson (English).  My favorite memories are being with my close friends in Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, A Capella Choir and Chanticleers. Yes, I enjoyed singing.

How has your Shaker Schools experience impacted your life? What have you carried forward from those years?
Shaker helped me appreciate a diverse array of people. Whether you always agree with people or not, being able to have thoughtful and civilized discourse is something  that my Shaker experience prepared me for. While I was not out as a gay man when I was at Shaker, I am encouraged that students today are supported and encouraged to be their best and most authentic selves. I loved growing up in Shaker and cherish the memories of my life there and the friendships I formed and still maintain.
