WRJ PACIFIC DISTRICT CONVENTION (San Diego, CA)
October 18-21, 2018
Open to all and especially great for up and coming leaders who want to learn and study and work with women from sisterhoods from all over our District, this convention is bound to be a great opportunity to really dig in and learn about Women of Reform Judaism, our Pacific District and how to make our own Sisterhood even better than it is.

| A Note From Our President |
Dear Sisters,
I visited Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam this week. To prepare for this powerful experience, I reread Anne's diary. Anne's house and diary have both changed much and little since my prior visit thirty-three years ago. Previously, one simply entered Anne's house through the front door, as she and her family did on July 6, 1942. Now, to preserve the house and create an expanded museum, the entrance is through a modernized building next door. Her diary has expanded as well. It was reedited in 1989, to include accounts previously unpublished. Anne's father, Otto, the only survivor of the secret annex, first released his daughter's diary in an edited form that he felt was both true to Anne and also respectful of those with whom they had hidden. The small rooms where Anne, her mother, father, sister, the van Pels family, and Fritz Pfeffer lived in hiding for over two years, remain unchanged.
Anne was given a diary on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, and from that day cherished the book as a friend, confiding in it her deepest thoughts. Anne's last entry was August 1, 1944, three days before her hiding place was discovered and all eight residents were captured. Initially, Anne wrote strictly for herself, then inspired by a covertly listened to 1944 radio broadcast from London, encouraging eye witness accounts of the suffering occurring during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Anne began reviewing and editing her diary with the wish to someday publish it. If you haven't read the newest version, I highly recommend you do so. Anne's voice resonates with the honest truth and deep emotions of young women universally. What moved me the most, was that Anne's notes about her feelings and hopes could have been written by me, my daughters, or my mother, who was also a young girl experiencing the war, but from the safety of her home in Quincy, Illinois. To add to the poignancy, my visit coincided with my mother's yahrzeit, and my thoughts were drawn to the full life Anne was robbed of having.
Visitors to Anne Frank's house encompass every age and nationality. Our group ranged from a young woman in a hijab carrying her infant child, to a fierce looking, but gentle, motor cycle group. The women directly in front of us were six older Jewish friends from Florida and Massachusetts. We lowered our heads and walked slowly though the hidden passage, revealed by a bookcase swung open on hinges. Climbing the stairway, the narrowness and steepness more akin to a ladder, my new friend from Miami struggled, but her friends encouraged and pulled her from above and my husband and I steadied her from below. The room where Anne slept still has postcards and movie posters she glued to the walls, much like we all had in our own teen bedrooms. We gently ran our hands over the sink where dishes had been washed, and along the windows that had been covered with dark curtains and opened barely enough to allow only the slightest of breeze. It was a heart wrenching experience.
What continues to resonate with individuals worldwide, is Anne's inherent belief in goodness. Her insights are powerful and inspire hope. Anne wanted to go on living even after her death. She has clearly succeeded.

Comments From the Clergy
Dear Friends,
This is our season of joy. In our text, the festival of Sukkot is known as Z'man Simchateinu, the time of our joy, a season that ends Monday evening when we rejoice at Simchat Torah, which also includes in its title the Hebrew word for joy.
As our Holy Days wrap up, our ritual season of joy comes to a close. How might we hold onto these feelings of gratitude, of love, of appreciation, of questioning, and of joy as we continue on throughout our year?
I invite you to join us Monday evening, October 1st, to celebrate at Simchat Torah: 5:30pm learning, 6:00pm dinner, 6:30pm dancing with the Torahs. Bring your love and your dancing shoes as we embrace our Torah and let our joy in this Z'man Simchateinu shine through.
Come however you are, just come.
