Dilly Dally in Cowley

For the last several summers Cowley County Tourism Alliance has organized the Cowley County Treasure Hunt which guided visitors and locals to numerous hidden treasures located across the county. This year, CCTA is putting a twist on the old favorite and has launched a new summer tourism promotion; "Dilly Dally in Cowley".

Dilly Dally in Cowley puts the treasure hunters in the driver's seat, quite literally. Throughout the summer months CCTA asks participants to photograph and post their favorite treasures to the Cowley County Tourism Facebook page. The tourism alliance will then narrow down the entries and winners will be determined by Facebook likes. The top gems from the contest will be mapped and shared to the public so everyone can seek out and enjoy a sampling of the Cowley County Treasures.

CCTA has announced three categories and posting dates for Dilly Dally in Cowley. Monuments, Memorials and Markers- May 15 through June 14; Art and Architecture-June 15 through July 14; and Foodie Favorites-July 15 through August 14. Pictures must be taken on public property in Cowley County and easily accessible. CCTA also requests that information on the entry such as location and significance be included with the Facebook post.

Full details and rules are posted on the Cowley County Tourism Facebook page or contact Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce-123 E. 9th Avenue or the Arkansas City Chamber of Commerce - 106 S. Summit with questions.

47th Walnut Valley Festival Poster to feature old 14th Street Bridge

Officials at Walnut Valley Association have announced that the poster for this year's Walnut Valley Festival will feature a landmark familiar to Winfield's citizens, albeit one that is no longer in existence. The old West 14th Street bridge, which this year was demolished to make way for a new bridge spanning the Walnut River, is the focal point of the poster for the 47th Walnut Valley Festival.

The Festival, which will be held Sept. 12-16, 2018, draws a crowd of 10-15 thousand people to celebrate a blend of all kinds of acoustic music, including bluegrass, folk, Americana, a little bit of cowboy, some Celtic, blues, jazz and swing, and more.

The old bridge across the river on West 14th Street was used as a secondary entrance to grounds during festival, with a gate staffed by WVA crew located on the east side. Many festival-goers described their campsite location in reference to the bridge, and for quite a few patrons the bridge served as the gateway for their final departure from festival grounds.

For the nostalgic, the bridge lives still on Google Maps' Street View. The application cuts between several different years, depending on which part of the fairgrounds one looks at, but all of the footage was obviously taken at or around festival time, with many campers caught in their daily routine by the roving Google recording vehicles. There, one can still meander across the old 14th Street Bridge, if only virtually.

Rex Flottman: " Through the years people crossed over the West 14th street bridge to discover an entirely new world - a world of music...music that was being performed, shared, taught and experienced for decades. Older ones passing tunes down to younger ones, and the young ones taking up the torch, adding their mark on the old songs and contributing new music from the perspective of young eyes. Long term relationships were formed, friends made, and students of the music found teachers. A community grew from the common love of making music under the trees and stars - around a campfire. Now the old iron bridge is gone, replaced by a new modern concrete bridge, not all that different from the ever-changing life we lead in the real world. I wonder what new music the next generation of travelers crossing over the bridge into our community will bring with them to share."

Bailey Haunschild has been working to create a dog park for Winfield as her 4H Junior Leaders Project. She has plans made, support from the city, construction plans ready to go, and now, is raising money to move the project forward.

Bailey believes a Dog Park could be the reason someone would choose to move to Winfield over a neighboring town without one. It promotes a healthy lifestyle for both the dogs and their owners. It has been found that pets are better behaved when active  and socialized. Whether you have a dog, just like dogs or just would like to support the project, your support and donation is appreciated.

DuckCreek & Daniels Ready Mix, as presenting sponsors, along with a host of event & gift sponsors are offering you a unique way to help Bailey reach her goal.  Join us Saturday, July 7th for a Trap Shoot!

This promises to be a fun day for all. No need to pre-register but if you do, you will be entered into a special drawing! Can't make it or not a shooter? Join the SILENT SHOOTER TEAM with a tax deductible contribution of $25 or more! Checks can be made out to Bailey's Barking Dog Park and sent to DuckCreek 11524 101st Rd. Winfield KS 67156

Work to Begin on Cowley County Community Health Needs Assessment

Over the next three months, William Newton Hospital will be partnering with the City-Cowley County Health Department and Community Health Center in Cowley County to update the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).

These organizations share a goal to understand progress in addressing community health needs cited in the 2015 CHNA and to collect up-to-date community health perceptions in Cowley County.

"Hospital leaders use the CHNA as a tool to respond to healthcare needs," says William Newton Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Ben Quinton. "The assessment not only informs hospital strategy, but is key to maintaining our tax-exempt status."

Affordable Care Act legislation requires all tax-exempt hospitals to submit a CHNA to the IRS every three years. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, the Community Health Center in Cowley County is also required to conduct a CHNA to fulfill funding requirements set forth by Health Resources and Services Administration.

To accomplish this work, a short online survey has been developed.

The CHNA feedback link can also be found on William Newton Hospital's, City-Cowley Health Department's and Community Health Center in Cowley County's website and/or Facebook pages.

"We hope that the community and health professionals will take advantage of this opportunity to provide input into the future of healthcare delivery in our county," comments City-Cowley County Health Department Administrator Tom Langer.

All community residents are encouraged to complete the CHNA online survey by Wednesday, August 1, 2018 and to attend the upcoming scheduled Town Hall on Tuesday August 21 from 11:30-1:00pm at Winfield Public Library.

Vince Vandehaar, MBA (VVV Consultants LLC, an independent research firm from Olathe, KS) has been retained to conduct this community wide research. If you have any questions about CHNA activities, please call 620-221-2300 extension 1113.
