CNA-Q IT programmes get Canadian re-accreditation (via Gulf-Times)

The College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q) Wednesday announced international re-accreditation of its four Information Technology programmes as certified by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).
CNA-Q's IT programmes have been awarded a three-year CIPS re-accreditation for 2018 – 2020, according to a statement. This designation acknowledges that the college’s educational programmes help students meet the demands of the Computing and Information Systems profession internationally.
Completion of the accredited computer information systems programmes will assist graduates in pursuing the Information Systems Professional (ISP) designation.
“The accreditation is an affirmation of the quality of CNA-Q’s curriculum, the soundness of its pedagogy and delivery, the caliber of CNA-Q’s faculty, and the physical, human and institutional supports in place to ensure a successful programme and exceptionally prepared IT professionals who are ready to meet Qatar’s information and communication technology needs,” said CNA-Q vice president, academic, Dr Samah Gamar.

The Digital Transformation In Government Conference was held this year at the Royal Canadian Air Force Officers Mess (158 Gloucester) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on the 12th and 13th of June 2019. ISACA Ottawa Valley and the Association of Enterprise Architects (Ottawa-Gatineau) led the initiative which was sponsored by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) Ontario, the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) Ottawa as well as the University of Ottawa e-Business graduate Program, a unique offering that addresses e-Society, e-Management and e-Technology across all faculties. Electronic Waste Over the Years (Featured Article)

Many of us wouldn’t think twice when it comes to disposing of our unwanted electronics and our first action would be to just throw them in the garbage which inevitably ends up in landfills. We generally do not think about how that could affect our environment or how it might not be the best way to take care of the sensitive and personal information that may still be present on those devices.
As of 2018, Canada’s population was approximately 37 million. Could you imagine if every household reused their devices or donated them to individuals in need, what the % of e-waste disposed in landfills would decrease to? How healthier our environment would be if we didn’t continuous destroy the earth with toxic chemicals that seep from each device into our soil and oceans. How many humans and animals we would save a year from poisoning?
In 2016, 25 million Tonnes of waste was recycled in Canada. E-waste is one of the biggest offenders in the waste disposal process. About 40% of the heavy metals in landfills, including lead, mercury and cadmium, comes from electronic devices. These chemicals or materials can cause harm to workers and communities at any stage of the product lifecycle.
The next question you need to ask yourself is what can you do to help? It is simple! ERA has prevented thousands of tonnes of electronic devices from ending up in landfills and instead, have re-purposed them back within the community. These devices gain a second lease of life and go to an individual who is badly in need of a laptop or a computer to improve their way of living and create a life for themselves.
Did you know?
Reusing one computer with a CRT monitor will save you the following:
- 30 lbs of hazardous waste
- 77 lbs of solid waste
- 147 lbs (17.5 gallons) of water from being polluted
- 32 tons of air from being polluted
- 1,333 lbs of CO2 from being emitted
- 7,719 kilowatts of energy (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
In 2018, ERA alone recycled 6,694 tonnes of non-reusable electronics from landfills and donated reusable devices to over 200 organizations in need Canada wide. They collected e-waste from 9,542 locations in Canada alone.

Call for Volunteers: CIPS Education Review Committee

Interested in actively supporting your Professional Society? Looking for a new challenge? CIPS is looking for Certified Members (I.S.P. or ITCP holders) to serve on the CIPS Education Review Committee.
Before starting the review of applications review committee members will virtually attend an orientation session to get familiarized with the review processes and procedures. The monthly time commitment is around 3 hours.
Offering your expertise to ensure the quality of the next generation of your profession is one of the most important contributions you can make.
CIPS Education Review Committee Member Responsibilities Include:
- Review and assess academic details based on educational transcripts and Canadian equivalency assessments;
- Prepare detailed findings on the assessment;
- Report the findings to the Registrar’s Office;
- Provide clarification and advice to the Certification Council on marginal or rejected applications;
- Provide advice to the Office of the Registrar on pre-assessments;
Requirements:
- An active holder of the I.S.P. or ITCP designation, or applying to obtain the I.S.P. or ITCP
- Education Review Committee members must be active faculty members at either the college Computing Information Systems (or similar) or university Computer Science, Software Engineering, M.I.S. (or similar) level.

IFIP/IP3 David O’Leary Award 2019 - Make a Nomination Today!

This award is named after CIPS member and former CIPS BC President, David O’Leary, who
sadly passed last year
.
IFIP IP3 has named an award in David's memory and wants to acknowledge an individual or organisation that has promoted and demonstrated Professionalism (Professional Practice) in ICT, has worked as an Ethics Evangelist, and/or has made strides in fostering diversity among ICT practitioners.
The winner will receive a cash prize of 1,500 USD, and the individual or organisation’s representative will be funded to travel to IFIP’s General Assembly in Kiev, Ukraine on 12 October 2019, to receive the prize.
