Book Reviews
A Borrowing of Bones
By Paula Munier
Reviewed by Joanne Sinchuk
We are always looking for new authors with a different outlook to the classic mystery/suspense tale. Especially something with a little twist. Now, I've found one that I can recommend.
Mercy Carr is a retired US Army vet, with a Belgian Malinois dog Elvis trained to sniff out bombs and other explosives.  Mercy and Elvis have an uneasy relation-ship; Elvis' original handler was Mercy's fiancé, and was killed in Afghanistan where they both served.  Elvis is adjusting to his retired vet status, with only an occasional flare up of his PTSD.
Munier has written a fairly complicated plot: abandoned babies, discovered hu-man bones, stabbed citizens and bomb threats.  And all in a somewhat idyllic town in rural Vermont populated with well-developed characters.  I needn't have worried, though, because Munier wraps it all up pretty neatly at the end.
Let me say that I am not a pet person.  I don't own a dog, and have never owned a dog. But after reading this book, I'm actually considering getting a dog!
Minotaur Books 2018 First edition  $26.99.

Lies
By T.M. Logan
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
Joe Lynch has picked up his four-year-old son from school and is on the way home. Suddenly William announces, "Mummy car!" Seeing his wife's car, Joe turns the car around to catch up with her as she enters the parking garage of a hotel. When he enters the garage, he sees his wife, Mel, with Ben, the husband of her best friend.
Joe waits until Mel leaves the building but cannot catch her. He waits for Ben, and a confrontation leads to a shoving match. Ben falls, hitting his head on the concrete bumper.
The child sees Ben on the ground surrounded by blood, and the stress causes him to have an asthma attack, but his inhaler is at home. Joe rushes home. When William is breathing normally, Joe returns to the hotel garage, but Ben, along with his car, is gone. No crime scene, no police, nothing.
At home, Mel insists she is not having an affair, that Ben only wanted her help with an employee problem. Joe wants to believe her, but he's not so sure.
Later, Ben's wife calls Mel and Joe asking for help. Ben has disappeared, and so has his gun. Photos and messages begin to appear on Joe's phone, on his Facebook page. And then accusations are sent to the headmaster at the school where Joe teaches.
And this is just the beginning! There are twists and turns around every corner as the suspense builds. As the story evolves and the tension mounts, you will not be able to put this book down until its surprising last page. The story will stay with you for a long time.
I am always happy to find a new, talented author with a first novel, and T.M. Logan is one of the best I have found in a long time. Don't miss Lies, and when you have finished, look for his next book, 29 Seconds. Highly Recommended! MPS $27.99

November Road
By Lou Berney
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
The assassination of JFK in November, 1963 provides the backdrop and the motivation for Frank Guidry to flee Dallas.  Frank has built a career as a trusted fixer for New Orleans based mob boss Carlos Marcello. He is in Dallas for a seemingly simple job. Unfortunately, he realizes that he is the last remaining person who can link Carlos to the assassination and that Carlos wants him dead.
Charlotte Roy, mother of two daughters, is stuck in a small town marriage to an alcoholic husband.   She decides to leave. Abruptly, she packs a couple of bags and bundles her two young children into the family car. She takes off with a vague plan to drive to California to stay with an aunt that she hasn't seen since childhood.
Within a couple of days, Frank and Charlotte meet at a crummy roadside motel. Frank is trying to stay off the beaten path until he can formulate a plan to leave the country. Charlotte and the girls become stranded when their car breaks down in a ditch.
These two runaways team up and continue their trek across the country.   Charlotte and the girls provide a good disguise for Frank, turning him into a "family" man. Frank provides transportation and some support for Charlotte. The action heats up when they get to Las Vegas and have to make some decisions about their individual futures.
The 1960s setting is perfect for this story. The characters are expertly drawn and colorful. The reader will easily relate to their motivations and conflicts. The dialog is just enough. The road trip is authentic and drives this cat and mouse story.
November Road is well written and is difficult to put down. This reader kept saying "just one more chapter" but kept turning the pages. The resolution is not pat, making for an interesting ending.
