We regret having to make the decision to cancel our Fall Conference but know that it was the most reasonable thing to do at the time. Many of us are contributing to the efforts to assist with the cleanup following the storm in South Carolina, North Carolina and in parts of Virginia, for which we are thankful.
Our program committee held a conference call this week and decided that it is best to maintain the Winter Membership Luncheon and Annual Meeting as scheduled in Charlottesville, December 5th. We explored options to reschedule the Fall Conference in Roanoke later this fall. However, available dates did not cooperate. The Fall Conference Committee led by Jill Loope and Ann Blair Miller did a fantastic job putting everything together and we appreciate their efforts. We hope to bring you some of the topics that were scheduled for the Roanoke meeting in future programming, so look for more information!
VEDA's leadership is beginning to finalize our Public Policy Agenda for the 2019 Virginia General Assembly session. We are scheduling meetings with Governor Northam's administration and with the General Assembly's leadership in the coming weeks and months. We want to hear from members about what your public policy issues and concerns are. As we work to develop our positions on various issues, we need your input, so let us know what's important to economic development in your community. All our members have a perspective that is worth considering as we finalize our Public Policy Agenda for 2019. Stephanie Landrum is doing a great job getting ready for 2019 and I'm excited for her and for VEDA!

Governor's Infrastructure Financing Conference,
December 10-12, 2018 will take place at
The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, Roanoke, Virginia. The conference is designed to bring together government and private sector professionals in discussions that will help facilitate the planning and delivery of much-needed capital improvement projects across Virginia, including schools.
The conference will highlight state funding resources available for capital improvement projects focusing on the health and safety of communities. Particular emphasis will be given to funding resources aimed at promoting economic development and job-creation opportunities for Virginians, including tourism. Informative sessions highlighting various sources of funding, including private financing of public infrastructure, public-private partnerships, state and federal loans and grants, bank loans, etc. will be held as well as the very basics of planning capital projects and developing financial policies that support capital improvement needs. Participants will have the opportunity to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits as well.
In addition to attracting local and state elected and appointed officials, the 2018 Governor's Infrastructure Financing Conference will include public finance professionals such as bankers, financial advisors, accountants, and attorneys, as well as engineers, builders, consultants, and other professionals who assist local communities in planning and implementing capital improvement projects. This will allow attendees an opportunity to network with professionals who may be able to help with their infrastructure financing needs.

CRCF FY2019 Solicitation Preview
Funding Technology Commercialization to Drive Economic Growth in Virginia
|
CIT is pleased to preview the Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund (CRCF) FY2019 solicitation. Approximately $2.4 million is available to award to Virginia's private sector, higher education, federal research facilities, and other research organizations through five programs: Commercialization, SBIR Matching Funds, STTR Matching Funds, Matching Funds, and Eminent Researcher Recruitment. Award caps range from $50,000 to $250,000. The RFP will be issued in early October.
CRCF will invite technology development projects in five targeted industries:
- Cyber security - with particular interest in applications for autonomous systems, identity management, cloud infrastructure, and Internet of Things
- Energy - specifically clean energy
- Information technology - specifically data analytics
- Life sciences - with particular interest in precision medicine, neuroscience, and medtech
- Unmanned systems

CRCF accelerates innovation and drives economic growth in Virginia by advancing solutions to important state, national, and global problems through technology research, development, and commercialization. Industry sectors eligible for CRCF funding are drawn from the Commonwealth Research and Technology Strategic Roadmap, which identifies research areas worthy of economic development and institutional focus in Virginia.

The Spotsylvania County Department of Economic Development's EDA owns 40+ acres of fully-entitled vacant industrial property in Spotsylvania County
.
The department is seeking for some model agreements used by localities, EDAs/IDAs, or commercial firms to manage such property such as mowing, security, stormwater, etc, and specifically how costs are paid.

Nominations are open for the 2019 Econ Development 40 Under 40 Awards! Development Counsellors International and Jorgenson Consulting are searching for the top 40 economic development professionals under the age of 40 who are making waves in the industry and doing great work for their regions. If that sounds like someone you know, we encourage you to take a moment and submit a nomination for a colleague (or yourself!) for the 40 Under 40 Awards.
Virginia has had three 40 Under 40 winners since 2013, including Grant Cothran, Norfolk Southern Corporation; Patrick E.W. Barker, Frederick County Economic Development Authority; and Kevin Hughes, City of Suffolk.
To be eligible, nominees must be under 40 years old as of January 01, 2019. The deadline to nominate is October 12, 2018. A selection committee, comprised of five industry thought leaders, will review nominations during the month of November, winners will be notified in December and DCI will officially announce and recognize them at IEDC's Leadership Summit in Fort Lauderdale, FL in January 2019.
