2018 Tapia Conference Highlights

The 2018 ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference, presented by CMD-IT, was held September 19-22 in Orlando Florida. Tapia 2018 broke attendance records with 1431 registered attendees, an increase of 20% over 2017. Of attendees, 58% were students.

Ronald Perez, Intel Fellow & Technical Lead, Data Center Group at Intel Corporation, spoke about Confidential Computing: Beyond Protection of Data at Rest and Data in Motion. Moshe Y. Vardi, George Distinguished Service Professor in Computational Engineering & Director, Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology at Rice University, gave the Ken Kennedy Distinguished Lecture on Humans, Machines, and Work: The Future is Now.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte wins 2018 CMD-IT University Award
|
|
The University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) was awarded the second annual
CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science. The University Award recognizes US institutions that have demonstrated a commitment and shown results for the retention of students from underrepresented groups in undergraduate Computer Science programs over the last five years. The award, sponsored by Microsoft, is focused on the following underrepresented groups: African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and People with Disabilities.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte received the award on September 20th at the 2018 ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing in Orlando, Florida. The award included a $15,000 cash award.
The CMD-IT University Award decision was based on UNC Charlotte's impressive quantitative reported results, which reflected high retention and graduation rates and qualitative reporting on their various retention programs. In particular, UNC Charlotte highlighted the following programs as directly impacting retention:
- Implementation of the Connected Learner program, which builds a sustainable practice of educational innovation across the undergraduate computing curriculum by increasing faculty awareness of teaching innovations, resources for pedagogical change, and support for teaching practices that engage students.
- Establishing multiple new scholarship programs that focus on promoting economic mobility and seek to diversify the student populations.
- Computing outreach to K12 through the STARS program (Students in Technology, Academia, Research and Service).
- Creation of a task force by the CCI Dean to measurably increase undergraduate diversity. Retention strategies include programs such as a peer tutoring, corporate mentoring, peer mentoring, acquisition of dedicated meeting spaces for women and underrepresented minority student organizations.
- Implementation of Improvisation Workshops to address bias and microaggressions in classroom and lab environments.
"CMD-IT is pleased to award the University of North Caroline Charlotte with the CMD-IT University Award. Their commitment to the retention of underrepresented minorities and people with disabilities through the implementation of innovative and effective programs is having a measurable impact," said Valerie Taylor, CMD-IT CEO and President.
"I am honored to have been asked to receive the CMD-IT University Award on behalf of UNC Charlotte's College of Computing and Informatics. At CCI, we work every day to set a high standard for inclusivity and diversity across our entire community. This award, though it recognizes what we have done, also serves as a reminder that our journey is just beginning. We look forward to a day when such acknowledgement is no longer needed, when the word "diversity" recedes into the background of what is just "normal" and expected. Thank you to CMD-IT and Microsoft for helping spearhead a cultural shift in our industry that will make us all stronger, better and more innovative," said Der Vang, Director of Mentoring, UNC Charlotte.

CAHSI Receives NSF Includes Alliance Grant
|
|
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued new awards that represent the next major step for its NSF INCLUDES program -- the development of a national network to enhance U.S. leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by broadening participation in those disciplines. The awards will support the first five NSF INCLUDES Alliances and the NSF INCLUDES Coordination Hub. These new entities will develop partnerships among stakeholders across the public, private and academic sectors, share promising practices for broadening participation and other useful data, contribute to the knowledge base on broadening participation in STEM through research, and establish a framework for supporting communications and networking among partners.
Ann Quiroz Gates, Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department, University of Texas at El Paso and leader of CAHSI, has received funding for the
NSF INCLUDES Alliance: Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI). T
he CAHSI INCLUDES Alliance will contribute knowledge on what organizational conditions build capacity to transform development of culturally relevant and engaging educational strategies that support Hispanic students in computing. The investigation will provide valuable insight into institutional and pedagogical mechanisms to better serve Hispanic students in computing disciplines and in other STEM disciplines. Alliance efforts have the potential to scale organizational capacity-building efforts in a wider range of contexts.
