Physicians Share Best Practices for Improving Adult Vaccination Rates
At an AAFP event in Kansas City, MO, family physicians shared how they improved adult vaccinations at their clinics, which were often solo practices.

The single most important factor was having buy-in from office staff, said one Michigan family physician who experienced success with the project. Front desk staff called and e-mailed patients from EHR-generated lists to remind them which vaccines they were due to receive. The group also sent mailers to patients and put posters from vaccine suppliers and the CDC that promoted vaccines in exam rooms. Finally, the physician issued standing orders to staff members, so many patients had their shot before the physician even entered the room.

99.98% Membership Renewal Represents Huge Effort
MAFP is proud to announce that during the membership renewal process for 2019, 99.98% of dues-paying members rejoined the MAFP. The dues category includes active, life, inactive, resident, supporting and transitional members. We also have 555 students who receive complimentary membership, totaling  1,308 members at the end of May.

The renewal process was a gargantuan effort led by MAFP President-Elect Dr. Bill Grantham and his Academy Committee. In addition to officers, district directors and MAFP staff, the committee went to the mat, making contact multiple times with unpaid members and encouraging them to renew. The committee had a contest to see how many renewals they could achieve, and Dr. Chrystal Sumrall of Laurel was the winner. Dr. Sumrall received a free registration to our summer meeting as a result.

Thank you for being a member of the MAFP. Without your dues, we could not have a strong voice for Family Medicine.
Adults With Behavior Health Disorders More Likely to Smoke

Family physicians see patients from all walks of life, including those with behavior health disorders. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 40% of all cigarettes smoked in the United States are smoked by adults who have a behavior health disorder.

Studies have shown that these individuals want to quit smoking and are interested in cessation services and resources. The AAFP has information that can help you as a physician help your patients with behavior health disorders quit smoking. Read here for more information.
