Week 4: Black Changemakers Series

During Week 4 of Black History Month, our Amana learning community has been diving into the lives of Stacey Abrams, Shirley Chisholm, John Carlos, Tommie Smith, and Colin Kaepernick- 5 individuals representing the past and the present who have made a deep mark on our society.

Students will learn about Stacey Abrams, who served for eleven years in the Georgia House of Representatives. In 2018, Abrams became the Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia, winning at the time more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history. Over the course of her career, Abrams has founded multiple organizations devoted to voting rights, training and hiring young people of color, and tackling social issues at both the state and national levels.

Shirley Chisholm in many ways paved the way for present changemakers. Chisolm was the first African American woman in Congress in 1968 and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States. While in Congress, she introduced more than 50 pieces of legislation and championed racial and gender equality, the plight of the poor, and ending the Vietnam War. She was a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971, and in 1977 became the first Black woman and second woman ever to serve on the powerful House Rules Committee.

We'll also explore the courage of two athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos. Smith and Carlos won gold and bronze in the 200 meter race at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City in track-and-field. They both agreed to use their medal wins as an opportunity to highlight the social issues roiling the United States at the time. Many saw the Olympic Games as an opportunity to highlight the need for better treatment of Black athletes and Black people around the world. Smith and Carlos decided to appear on the podium bearing symbols of protest and strength: black-socked feet without shoes to bring attention to Black poverty and raised, black-gloved fists to represent their solidarity and support with Black people and oppressed people around the world.

Connecting these legends to the present, students will learn about athlete Colin Kaepernick as well. Kaepernick played 6 seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. He knelt during the national anthem at the start of NFL games in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in America. These protests received polarized reactions, with some praising him and his stand against racism and others denouncing him. As of January 2021, he remains unsigned by any professional football team.
Spring 2021: Request to F2F Switch

Please fill out the below form if your family would like to request your student(s) make the switch from Remote Learning at home to Face-to-Face Learning in the school building. This is ONLY for students who are currently REMOTE.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Due to limited seats, we will have a LOTTERY to select which students will switch to Face-to-Face Learning in March. Our team will also be evaluating which students require special needs/services- these students will receive priority.
  • Honoring your request for each child will also be DEPENDENT on the availability of space in your child's classroom. To ensure that we are keeping our students and staff safe, each classroom has a maximum capacity of students. If you have filled this form out, but there is no space left in your child's classroom, your student will continue virtually until the end of Spring 2021 Semester in May.

IMPORTANT DATES:
  • This form will be open from February 10th - March 1st.
  • The deadline to complete this form is: March 1st at midnight (11:59PM)
  • Parents will be informed of lottery results on March 3rd
  • The first day new students will arrive into the school building will be Tuesday, March 16th

LAST WEEK:
PTO Shoe Drive: Donate Your Used Shoes!

Amana PTO is working with a local non-profit to be of service by asking that our community support H.E.A.L (Help Educate Assist Lives) by donating gently used shoes (all sizes, colors, styles, adults, and children).

H.E.A.L (https://heal-lives.org/) focuses on providing basic needs and educational resources for orphans and underprivileged youth in the communities we serve, with the purpose of creating a better living and learning environment. The organization provides services, funds, and material goods to communities in Liberia.

We are pleased to partner with them and extend our #WeAreCrew spirit outside of our walls and into the world.

Please drop your shoes in the bins that will be available in front of the PTO offices from Tuesday, January 19th - February 28th.

Thanks as always for your partnership in making Amana principles a part of the world's norms!
