A MESSAGE FROM MRS. STALLMANN
There has been much discussion about the impact violent video games has on young children. And the verdict is not conclusive, although a report in 2015 from the American Psychological Association released a report that in part stated, “The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and heightened aggressive behavior, aggressive cognitions, and aggressive affect and reduced pro-social behavior, empathy, and sensitivity to aggression.”

What we have noticed here at school is that we do see behaviors, especially on the playground, that mimic the violent actions seen in video games. Often when young children are playing video games that are geared towards a mature audience, they are being exposed to situations and content that is beyond their emotional or intellectual growth. The students want to play recess games using the same types of make-believe weapons as used in these games. And they want to talk to each other in the same terminology or “smack” talk each other the way they do to people they are playing online with.

We do spend time talking to the students about appropriate behavior and vocabulary when they are “at work” (school) and how this may be different than how they act and speak with their friends or at home. Although there is conflicting opinions about how violent video games affect young children the more realistic the game is, the harder it is for young children to separate their responses in the video game from their responses to real life violence.

Have a wonderful weekend!
