18 San Francisco Bay Area Championships
Does the number 18 ring a bell?
That's the number of World Championships won by the Warriors, 49ers, Giants, A's and Raiders (LA Raiders Super Bowl win not included because it's LA). If you are boo-hooing the Golden State Warriors falling short of the "Three Peat" and adding number 19, snap out of it! It was a heroic run with "Strength in Numbers" showing the team's true character.
The map of North America is chock full of major cities who have fallen far short in the ongoing Golden Age for those who live in the Golden Gate part of the Golden State. Wear your winning gear everywhere and show the pride represented by 18. Think of multiple millions of sports fanatics from coast-to-coast who are still striving to get into Championship double figures.
Remember that we are a bit different here in the Bay Area. We are the only market in sports history that staged a World Series between our local nines in the midst of a 6.9 tectonic plate shift!
Title Towns (Championships won in the Big Four pro sports -- NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.
49 -- New York City
30 -- Boston
29 -- Chicago
25 -- Los Angeles
24 -- Montreal (24 Stanley Cups)
22 -- Detroit (11 Stanley Cups)
18 -- San Francisco Bay Area
The Bay Area moves into fifth place when you subtract the Stanley Cups in Montreal and Motown. The unfiltered joy that the 49ers, Warriors, Giants, A's and untitled Sharks have provided us in person, on TV, radio, social media, newspapers, sports bars, dens and global digital delivery defines our passion and pride.
Take a quick time out to appreciate the players and coaches, owners, managers and other organizational teammates who have been at the forefront of this tidal wave of titles. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, Bill Walsh, Ronnie Lott, Eddie D, Al Attles, Rick Barry, Keith Wilkes, Clifford Ray, Franklin Mieuli, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Steve Kerr, Joe Lacob, Bruce Bochy, Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner, Peter McGowan, Al Davis, Ken Stabler, Willie Brown, Fred Biletnikoff, Marcus Allen, Charlie Finley, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Joe Rudi, Walter Haas, Rickey Henderson, The Bash Brothers, Dave Stewart, and Tony LaRussa among a much larger galaxy of stars from yesterday and today who didn't win Championships here.
Their personalities and professionalism helps define us as a sports market with class and sass. So raise a glass of whatever and toast our teams who have given us the opportunity to make Joyful Noise together.

San Francisco Giants Report
San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford (35) tags out Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy (13) on a steal attempt during the eighth inning at Oracle Park on June 9. But the Blue Crew would prevail, 1-0, off of a first inning home run by the same Max Muncy.

Last week San Francisco dealt with divisional matchups, squaring up with the Dodgers in Los Angeles for a four-game series before heading to Phoenix to take on the D-backs
over the weekend.
The Giants struck first in their four-game rivalry set on Monday as Tyler Beede recorded his first career win in a close 3-2 ballgame. Clayton Kershaw shut down the San Francisco bats hard on Tuesday night, dealing seven scoreless innings on the way to a huge 9-0 Dodgers thump. Los Angeles fired up for nine runs again in Wednesday's bout, becoming the first MLB team to reach 50 wins in the 2019 season with their 9-2 victory. The next evening the Dodgers' offense powered on for nine runs for the third straight game, only this time San Francisco had a much stronger rebuttal. After putting up four in the top of the ninth inning to make it a one-run ballgame, San Francisco could not cap off a comeback, falling 9-8 for their third straight loss.
The Giants found another spot back in the win column at Chase Field on Friday evening, as they plated eleven to take down the D-backs, 11-4. Alex Dickerson made his Giants debut in this bout, mashing a grand slam on the way to a six-RBI performance. San Francisco officially won the series with Saturday's victory, taking the game, 7-4. Dickerson showed out in this matchup as well, ripping two doubles for three RBIs to keep his beginnings solid. Seeking the sweep, the Giants were unsuccessful in handing Arizona their seventh straight loss, falling instead 3-2 in extras on a walk-off base knock from Tim Locastro in the tenth.
San Francisco sits dead last in the NL West at 33-43, four games back from the fourth-place Padres. The Giants look to improve their standing as they settle in at Oracle Park for a seven-game homestand, first taking on the Colorado Rockies in a three-game set before facing the
D-backs in a four-game weekend series.

Oakland A's Report

* * *
The Oakland Athletics looked to break out of their .500 status last week, beginning with a three-game home series against the MLB-worst Baltimore Orioles.
Mike Fiers tossed a beauty in the first matchup, allowing just four hits over 6.2 innings pitched to lead the A's to a narrow 3-2 victory. Last Tuesday's win at the Coliseum came in much more dominant fashion, as Oakland went yard six times to crush the Orioles, 16-2. With the opportunity for the series sweep, the Athletics handed Baltimore their eighth straight loss, 8-2, behind Chris Bassitt's no-hit bid through five complete innings.
The winning momentum built during the Orioles series was undoubtedly important as the Tampa Bay Rays, the second-place contender in the AL East, arrived at the Coliseum for a four-game weekend set.
Last Thursday's starter, Frankie Montas, hurled eight solid innings, allowing just a single run. However, the Rays charged late to put Oakland down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Late heroics from Matt Chapman, however, lifted the A's to victory in walk-off fashion as he juiced a three-run bomb into left-center field to send fans home with a dramatic 5-4 win.
Unfortunately the following day Montas was suspended for 80 games for alleged PED abuse. The A's pitching rotation is now without their ace and looking for someone to fill an all-too-big role.
Shaken by the news, Oakland was unable to surmount a bottom-of-the-ninth comeback in Friday's matchup, falling 5-3. The A's bounced back on Saturday, winning 4-2 behind a two RBI HR performance from Matt Chapman. Looking to take the series, Oakland settled for the series split on Sunday, falling 8-2 to a hot offensive performance from the Rays.
The Athletics are now 41-38 on the season, 1.5 games behind the Texas Rangers and in sole possession of third place in the AL West standings. They seek to gain ground as they head to St. Louis for a three-game series beginning Tuesday, then return to California to take on the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim for a three-game weekend set.

San Jose Earthquakes Academy Sophie Jones wins national award
Quakes Academy Midfielder Sophie Jones Named Gatorade National
Girls
Soccer Player
of the Year
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose Earthquakes Academy midfielder Sophie Jones has been named the 2018-19 Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year. She becomes the first female athlete from the Bay Area to win the national award in any sport since Ashton Purvis (track and field) of Oakland in 2009-10. The award was presented to her on Wednesday morning by seven-time NFL Pro Bowl quarterback and Super Bowl XXIX MVP Steve Young.
The Gatorade Player of the Year award was established in 1985 to recognize the nation's most elite high school student-athletes for their athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character. The honor has previously been awarded to many of our nation's most legendary athletes, including Peyton Manning (1993-94), Kerri Walsh (1995-96), Kobe Bryant (1995-96), Aly Wagner (1996-97), Zack Greinke (2001-02), LeBron James (2001-02; 2002-03), Candace Parker (2002-03; 2003-04) and Clayton Kershaw (2005-06).
In addition to the Quakes Academy, Jones also played for Menlo School and led the Knights to a 20-2-2 record and the Central Coast Section Division I sectional tournament championship this past season. Despite missing time while competing with the United States U-20 National Team, she finished with 18 goals and 16 assists. Jones has signed her National Letter of Intent to play at Duke University beginning in 2019 and headlines their top-five recruiting class.
Jones represented the United States at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay. She has also been previously named the 2018-19 Gatorade California Girls Soccer Player of the Year and United Soccer Coaches Player of the Year. (Note: please see another tribute to Sophie Jones under Sports Prep Star further down.)

Jones scored 18 goals and added 16 assists despite missing the final two games of the season while training with the U.S. Soccer Under-20 Women's National Team. She also played in the 2018 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Uruguay in December. Jones was also named the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Youth Girls National Player of the Year for her performance with her club team. She carried a 3.65 GPA and will attend Duke University in the fall.
