2018 Garden Success

The peaches were pretty good sized and had very good flavor. The skins were a little bitter so we pealed them.
|
|
|
|
|
The last 3 peaches from our tree, all snuggled in their nylon stockings. This worked out VERY well.
|
|
So the interesting thing about gardening is that it is much like life itself - many ups and downs, successes and failures, with inevitable lessons to be learned along the way. As is true in my "real" life, I thank God for all my friends who have helped me along the way, given me great advice, and encouraged me when I felt discouraged.

Got a few cabbages so far. This one is just about ready to pick.

With so much bounty you can imagine how much time it takes to can, freeze, dehydrate, and otherwise process all of this. And my garden really is not big, compared to others. Growing up a city girl, all of this is relatively new to me and a constant learning process. I like knowing how to grow food, how to preserve it, and the satisfaction of knowing that the food is flavorful, wholesome, and safe. And being able to share it with friends and family.
My friend, Lisa Wagner, gave me a box each of apples and pears from her trees, and with the box of peaches I bought from a farm stand on my way back from Grand Junction, I made pear/apple/peach fruit leather, peach/pear topping, peach syrup, applesauce, apple and pear nectar, apple juice, and dried apples. Lots of work but oh so good!

Colorado Colors
Our granddaughters, Charlee and Bella, were visiting for a week. I took them home to Grand Junction last weekend, via Red Mountain Pass. That is a VERY scary pass, but SO very beautiful. I think we caught it at its peak for color.

The Colorado Monument
While in Grand Junction our son, Dusty, took the girls and me for a drive through the Colorado Monument National Park. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Can't believe I had never seen it. While I thought it was a single "monument," it was in fact just a gorgeous park with spectacular view after view. We also saw 5 or 6 bighorn sheep, although their horns were not large.

| Reece, our special "special needs" granddaughter, celebrated her 12th birthday in September. She is our miracle baby. Teeg, 4, chums up for the picture. |

In Closing . . .
It's about time to start bringing the cattle back from Pagosa, in preparation for winter. It has been awfully dry here in Arboles and the ground is pretty parched, especially with no irrigation. We are trying to hold out as long as we can in Pagosa, always hoping for more rain down here to keep the grass growing as long as it will. Managing through this drought has been a real challenge for Allan, but he has done a great job to get us through to this point. Praying that the winter will bring some much needed snow.
We have a overstock of ground beef right now, so we are offering it at crazy low prices in hopes of making room in our freezers. Hopefully you will find some friends to help take advantage of the 100 pound pricing.
