SENIOR SUNRISE
On Tuesday, September 25, the Peninsula High Class of 2019 gathered on campus in the early morning chill to watch the sun rise over the football field. Unfortunately, this year the sun was blocked by the overcast skies, but the seniors still enjoyed bagels, muffins, hot chocolate, and hanging out with their classmates. This annual event is symbolic of the beginning of the senior year. Seniors will celebrate a sunset evening at the end of the school year to symbolize the end of their time at Peninsula High. Thank you to ASB for sponsoring this special event.

VISION AND HEARING TESTS
Our school nurse Wendy Keller and the PVPUSD Vision and Hearing Team successfully screened over 700 students for vision and/or hearing in September. The students were well behaved and polite. A great big thank you to our parent volunteers Liz Umbrell and Sangita Mody. It would have been difficult to have the screenings go so smoothly without our parent helpers!

PRINCIPAL'S ADVISORY COUNCIL
This week I met with my Principal Advisory Council where we discussed many different school issues. I always enjoy hearing the students' perspective on everything from school culture to facilities. This group will meet multiple times throughout the year and help me to stay connected with what is going well on the campus in addition to areas that may need some attention.

PSAT PRE-ADMIN
All juniors and sophomores who signed up for the PSAT exam MUST attend one of the PSAT Pre-Admin sessions before school this Wednesday, October 3, to prepare their answer sheets. Wednesday is a Late Start bell schedule, so students with a 0 period should come to the gym at 8am and those without a 0 period should come at 9am. Students should bring a #2 pencil (not mechanical), a clipboard or other hard surface to write on, and their PVPHS id card. Any student that will not be at school that day should contact Mrs. Breitenstein ([email protected]) in the Main Office.

HOMECOMING VOTING
A special Homecoming tradition is our Homecoming Court. This year all Homecoming Court voting will be online! Students can nominate other students in their grade to be on the Homecoming Court. Students have until 10:30am this Tuesday morning, October 2, to make their nominations. To use the online system students will need to enter their last name and their student ID number, which can be found on their student ID card.

Students can only nominate others in their grade. These are the links to use to make nominations:
If you have any problems accessing the system, please see our Activities Director, Mrs. Pollock, in the Activities Office, P115.

CLUB RUSH
This Tuesday and Wednesday, October 2 and 3, all Panthers will have the opportunity to sign up for clubs that interest them. Panthers will have over 125 clubs to choose from! Club Rush will be during lunch. Each club will have a table in the amphitheater and student leaders will answer questions. Click HERE to view the list of this year's chartered clubs.
MUN
On Saturday, September 22, 2018, Peninsula High School's Model United Nations attended Santa Margarita High School's annual fall conference. It was their first conference of the year, but it was impossible to tell as our delegates returned to form with flying colors. It was also the first ever conference for some of our novice delegates, but again, you could have never guessed as they looked confident in committee and performed exquisitely. They competed against high schools from all over California, and earned 15 individual awards. The conference was headed by student advisers Nicholas Goldenberg, Matthew Dollinger, and Mumba Mulenga.

Our novice delegates debated topics from Religious Intolerance to Biodiversity while our more experienced advanced delegates discussed solutions for problems such as Post Conflict Recovery and reforming the United Nations. They represented a wide range of countries including Costa Rica, Congo, Thailand, Iran, Jamaica, Japan, and Pakistan. All delegates were able to approach their topic without any personal bias, and successfully debated each topic on behalf of their respective countries.

Our Peninsula delegates performed exceptionally well at Santa Margarita, earning awards in novice and advanced committees. The awards are as follows:

Outstanding
Ronjini Chatterjee
Mariko Bronson
Natalie Wong
Fiona Yang
Kaylen Ng
Best Delegate:
Allison Khan

Commendation
Ryan Cardinali
Brianna Cho
Tara Labisi
Julianna Panetta

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL FILLS PARENT SEATS
The following five parents have been added to the PVPHS School Site Council: Deb Alimento,  Alice Chou,  Debbie Delarosa,  Sangita Mody, and Lori Siembieda. This school year, we had five parent/community openings and had exactly five parents that were interested in serving on SSC, which is a two-year position. Therefore, an election does not need to be held for parent/community members. Congratulations, again, to our parents who along with our faculty, staff, and students will provide input to help make decisions that affect PVPHS.

PARENT UNIVERSITY
Parent University, a collaboration between PVPUSD and the Peninsula Education Foundation, provides parents and students support and education through a speaker series covering topics that will help your child navigate through school and life. The first presentation in this three-part series is this Tuesday, October 2, at PVIS from 6pm to 7pm.

PARENTAL STRATEGIES FOR HELPING TEENS IN TODAY'S PRESSURE COOKER: PART II - SETTING LIMITS

Here is a secret. Kids love limits and boundaries. You would never know it from their behavior, and their reactions to limits. It is in their developmental DNA to push against boundaries and rules and limits, and in doing so it is how they come to understand themselves and the world around them better, and how they grow emotionally. While they will rebel against most of the limits you set, limits actually provide a safety net for them to explore their environment. They know how far they can go, and know if they cross those lines, they will be taken care of. Those who grow up with little or no limits, experience fear and uncertainty, which leads to anxiety and the need to predict the future and plan for all possible outcomes. Growing up with inadequate limits develops distrust in one's ability to live in the present and develop good coping skills.

Limits by themselves are not enough. Parents need to develop limits, consequences, and follow through. All three aspects need to be present. Limits without consequences or follow through are the proverbial "bark without bite". Limits need to be set clearly and objectively, and understood by the child. As much as possible, they should be set out in advance of behaviors, and not reactive to issues and events which come up. Naturally, all behavior is not always predictable. We will use an ongoing example for demonstration. A curfew limit could be "you need to be home by 10 PM". The child needs to understand it is not 10:05 or 10:10, but 10. Consequences should be explained in advance, and not as a reaction to an event. I believe it is important for consequences to be related to the offense, and not random. If curfew is the issue, the consequences need to be related to privileges for staying out, and not unrelated issues. It is very important to not have consequences of removing things which are positive for the child's development. In our curfew example, the consequence could be something like "if you come home after 10, you won't be able to go out next weekend". The consequences should be meaningful enough to change behavior, and should BE DISCUSSED IN ADVANCE. Children will learn they have choices, which have consequences and have a right to make those choices. This approach enables parents to diffuse their anger over broken limits. Imagine, instead of getting angry at your child for coming home late, you said " I respect your right to have an extra 10 minutes out today, knowing that as a result you will not be going out next weekend". The final piece, and most critical piece, is follow through. You must think clearly about the consequences you set, and be certain you are able/willing to act on them. If you do not, if you soften, then your child will learn to not trust your words, and internally ignore your limits. We have all seen rambunctious 2 year olds in shopping carts in the grocery store throwing items. The parent screams "if you don't stop, I'm never taking you shopping again". Even at 2, the child smirks internally, knows this is not true, and their willingness to listen is eroded slightly. Before you set consequences, make sure it is something you will see through.

This process - LIMITS/CONSEQUENCES/FOLLOW THROUGH is essential in raising children who will feel secure and safe in a stressful world.

Next week, I will discuss Delayed Gratification.
